Article Synopsis
  • More immigrants face vitamin D (vitD) deficiency compared to non-immigrants, and existing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) do not adequately address this issue.
  • A study evaluated the quality of published CPGs related to vitD and immigrant health using the AGREE II tool, identifying 25 relevant guidelines with only one offering immigrant-specific recommendations.
  • The findings indicate a significant gap in healthcare guidelines for vitD among immigrants, emphasizing the need for improved recommendations and urgent action to combat this deficiency.

Article Synopsis
  • Psoriasis is a long-lasting inflammatory skin disease, and this study focuses on understanding the costs involved in treating moderate-to-severe cases with approved biologic therapies in Colombia.
  • The research calculated the cost per responder (CPR) for various treatments based on their effectiveness, measured by improvement in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores, using data from previous studies.
  • Findings revealed that adalimumab, infliximab, and guselkumab were among the most cost-effective treatments, as they had low CPR values for both the first year and maintenance periods.

Background: Pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing identifies pharmacotherapeutic risks to permit personalized therapy. Identifying the genetic profile of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) who are considered for therapy with clopidogrel (P2Y receptor blockers) and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) contributes to the treatment paradigm. Patient preferences would inform a collaborative framework and by extension inform healthcare policy formulation.

Infections continue to be a major cause of post-transplant morbidity and mortality, requiring increased health services utilization. Estimates on the magnitude of this impact are relatively unknown. Using national administrative databases, we compared mortality, acute care health services utilization, and costs in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients to nontransplant patients using a retrospective cohort of hospitalizations in Canada (excluding Manitoba/Quebec) between April-2009 and March-2014, with a diagnosis of pneumonia, urinary tract infection (UTI), or sepsis.

Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is an effective treatment for men with advanced prostate cancer, but loss of bone mineral density (BMD) is a major risk factor for fractures. This review compared the efficacy of available treatments to provide prescribing guidance to healthcare professionals. This is the first review to compare the effectiveness of different osteoporotic treatments (bisphosphonates, denosumab, toremifene, and raloxifene) on BMD in patients with non-metastatic prostate cancer on ADT using network meta-analysis.
