Wild olive oil (WOO) derives from naturally occurring wild olive trees. WOO has received increasing attention over the last decade, in response to the growing demand of the consumer for high-quality food products which may also provide health benefits. This study provides a comprehensive review of the available studies concerning the chemical composition of WOO produced across diverse geographical regions.

Purpose: Subdural hematoma (SDH) is quickly becoming the most common neurosurgical pathology due to the aging population. Middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) has recently emerged as an effective adjunct to surgical SDH evacuation by decreasing recurrence risk. MMAE has also shown promise as a standalone SDH intervention, but clinical and radiographic predictors of successful MMAE remain ill-defined.

Effect of the Bioprotective Properties of Lactic Acid Bacteria Strains on Quality and Safety of Feta Cheese Stored under Different Conditions.

Lately, the inclusion of additional lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains to cheeses is becoming more popular since they can affect cheese's nutritional, technological, and sensory properties, as well as increase the product's safety. This work studied the effect of L33 and L125 free cells and supernatants on feta cheese quality and fate. In addition, rapid and non-invasive techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and multispectral imaging (MSI) analysis were used to classify the cheese samples based on their sensory attributes.

Despite its recognized benefits, particularly its lower physiological burden compared to other training methods, research on USRPT is still in its early stages. There are misunderstandings related to its intensity and the pace of calculation.

Treatment of tumor-induced cerebral venous sinus stenosis: Technical note and review of the literature.

Introduction: Tumors that invade or compress the venous sinuses have the potential to impair venous drainage. Rarely, this may be so severe as to induce intracranial hypertension. Other studies have previously described venous sinus stenting (VSS) for the treatment of these symptomatic lesions.

Posterior fossa Hodgkin's lymphoma radiographically mimicking an arteriovenous malformation: illustrative case.

Background: Intracranial Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is an exceedingly rare condition that is at an increased risk of misdiagnosis and mismanagement, especially when initial radiographic evidence points to an alternative pathology.

Observations: The authors describe the case of a 75-year-old female who presented with a posterior fossa lesion initially concerning for a vascular malformation on computed tomography imaging due to perilesional hypervascularity. Subsequent angiography revealed a developmental venous anomaly (DVA) but no arteriovenous shunting.

Hypogonadism and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), recently proposed to be renamed to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is a major global public health concern, affecting approximately 25-30% of the adult population and possibly leading to cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver transplantation. The liver is involved in the actions of sex steroids via their hepatic metabolism and production of the sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Liver disease, including NAFLD, is associated with reproductive dysfunction in men and women, and the prevalence of NAFLD in patients with hypogonadism is considerable.

Occipital venous sinus stenting for idiopathic intracranial hypertension and pulsatile tinnitus: A case series.

Venous sinus stenting for dural venous sinus outflow obstruction due to an intrinsic filling obstruction or extrinsic stenosis is an increasingly popular treatment strategy for idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and isolated pulsatile tinnitus (PT). The most common site of stenosis is the lateral venous sinus at the transverse-sigmoid junction. Approximately 10% of the population has a persistent occipital venous sinus (OVS), a variant that may be the dominant venous drainage pathway in the setting of a hypoplastic or aplastic transverse sinus.

Anatomical determinants of occipitocervical fusion in skull base chordoma resection: a systematic review of the literature with illustrative cases.

Objective: Skull base chordomas are rare, locally osseo-destructive lesions that present unique surgical challenges due to their involvement of critical neurovascular and bony structures at the craniovertebral junction (CVJ). Radical cytoreductive surgery improves survival but also carries significant morbidity, including the potential for occipitocervical (OC) destabilization requiring instrumented fusion. The published experience on OC fusion after CVJ chordoma resection is limited, and the anatomical predictors of OC instability in this context remain unclear.

The role of surgical disconnection for posterior fossa pial arteriovenous fistulas and dural fistulas with pial supply: an illustrative case series.

Background: Pial arteriovenous fistulas (pAVFs) are rare vascular malformations characterized by high-flow arteriovenous shunting involving a cortical arterial supply directly connecting to venous drainage without an intermediate nidus. Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) can infrequently involve additional pial feeders which can introduce higher flow shunting and increase the associated treatment risk. In the posterior fossa, arteriovenous fistula (AVF) angioarchitecture tends to be particularly complex, involving either multiple arterial feeders-sometimes from both dural and pial origins-or small caliber vessels that are difficult to catheterize and tend to be intimately involved with functionally critical brainstem or upper cervical cord structures.

Study of the Microbiome of the Cretan Sour Cream Staka Using Amplicon Sequencing and Shotgun Metagenomics and Isolation of Novel Strains with an Important Antimicrobial Potential.

Staka is a traditional Greek sour cream made mostly from spontaneously fermented sheep milk or a mixture of sheep and goat milk. At the industrial scale, cream separators and starter cultures may also be used. Staka is sometimes cooked with flour to absorb most of the fat.

Investigation of the Microbiome of Industrial PDO Sfela Cheese and Its Artisanal Variants Using 16S rDNA Amplicon Sequencing and Shotgun Metagenomics.

Sfela is a white brined Greek cheese of protected designation of origin (PDO) produced in the Peloponnese region from ovine, caprine milk, or a mixture of the two. Despite the PDO status of Sfela, very few studies have addressed its properties, including its microbiology. For this reason, we decided to investigate the microbiome of two PDO industrial Sfela cheese samples along with two non-PDO variants, namely Sfela touloumotiri and Xerosfeli.

Food Safety and Management System Audits in Food Retail Chain Stores in Greece.

The present study aimed to assess the performance of food safety management systems in food retail stores via audits to reveal potential areas of improvement and to find out possible corrective actions to suggest to the top management. Two cycles of on-site audits took place in 106 stores to assess the requirements and hygiene conditions. After the first cycle of audits, improvements were suggested to the top management, and a second cycle of audits took place after a reasonable time.

A characteristic cerebellar biosignature for bipolar disorder, identified with fully automatic machine learning.

Background: Transcriptomic profile differences between patients with bipolar disorder and healthy controls can be identified using machine learning and can provide information about the potential role of the cerebellum in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder.With this aim, user-friendly, fully automated machine learning algorithms can achieve extremely high classification scores and disease-related predictive biosignature identification, in short time frames and scaled down to small datasets.

Method: A fully automated machine learning platform, based on the most suitable algorithm selection and relevant set of hyper-parameter values, was applied on a preprocessed transcriptomics dataset, in order to produce a model for biosignature selection and to classify subjects into groups of patients and controls.

Winter sports are the cause of a significant number of spinal injuries in Switzerland. However, the number of patients, the mechanism, the presentation, the diagnosis and the treatment of vertebral fractures have considerably evolved over the last decades. As the hospital of Sion, in Valais, is particularly exposed to these diagnoses, we analyzed two series of prospective cases 30 years apart (1989-1990 and 2019-2020) and propose a review of the main types and mechanisms of fractures, diagnosis, and management for the primary care physician.

16S and 18S rDNA Amplicon Sequencing Analysis of Aesthetically Problematic Microbial Mats on the Walls of the Petralona Cave: The Use of Essential Oils as a Cleaning Method.

The presence of microbial communities on cave walls and speleothems is an issue that requires attention. Traditional cleaning methods using water, brushes, and steam can spread the infection and cause damage to the cave structures, while chemical agents can lead to the formation of toxic compounds and damage the cave walls. Essential oils (EOs) have shown promising results in disrupting the cell membrane of bacteria and affecting their membrane permeability.

Evaluation of bigel systems as potential substitutes to partially replace pork backfat in semi-dry sausages.

Bigels prepared with olive oil oleogels admixed with κ-carrageenan or κ-carrageenan and gelatin hydrogels (BG1 and BG2, respectively) were characterized with respect to microstructure and textural properties and were used as pork backfat alternatives in semi-dry sausages. Stable oleogel-in-hydrogel type bigels were formed, with BG2 having higher hardness values. Control sausages (CF) were formulated with 20% pork backfat and sausage treatments B1F and B2F had 50% of the pork backfat substituted by BG1 and BG2 bigels, respectively.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent tumor in women. Improvements in treatment led to declined mortality, resulting in more survivors living with cancer- or therapy-induced comorbidities. In this study, we investigated the impact of neoplasia and chemotherapy on resting energy expenditure (REE) and body composition, in relation to cancer-related fatigue.

The Low-FODMAP Diet, IBS, and BCFAs: Exploring the Positive, Negative, and Less Desirable Aspects-A Literature Review.

The literature about the association of branched short-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is limited. BCFAs, the bacterial products of the catabolism of branched-chain amino acids, are proposed as markers for colonic protein fermentation. IBS is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by low-grade inflammation and intestinal dysbiosis.

The Impact of Change Management in the Greek National Health System: A Quantitative Study.

Introduction:  Serious changes took place in Greece due to the economic crisis of 2008, which led to significant changes in Greece's health sector. The reforms and changes that were made to the National Health System (NHS) aimed to improve it, provide quality services to its users, and adapt it to Greece's new external environment. The aim of this study was to assess the management of these changes by the leadership of the NHS and to examine their effectiveness.

The interdural hematoma: A subtype of convexity subdural/dural hematoma with specific radioanatomical characteristics.

Background: Rare cases of biconvex hematomas splitting the convexity dura mater were reported and denominated interdural hematoma (IDH). Due to their rarity, little is known about their radiological characteristics, and in most cases, their invasive management with craniotomy and dural membrane excision is unnecessary.

Case Description: We report here a case of single burr-hole endoscopic evacuation of an IDH and its complete resolution after the 6-month follow-up imaging.
