The production of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), a major cause of neoangiogenesis, is a prerequisite for tumor growth and invasion. VEGF have also been shown to be important for the formation of osteoclasts. Because giant cell tumors of bone (GCT) are frequently hypervascular and have the ability to recruit macrophages and multinucleated osteoclast-like giant cells, we evaluated the levels of VEGF gene transcript in several of these tumors using Northern blot analyses, semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and immunohistochemistry.

The accumulation of tubular aggregates in type II skeletal muscle fibres and fibrillo-granular inclusions in hippocampal protoplasmic astrocytes are characteristic lesions of apolipoprotein E deficient mice. Moreover these inclusions reacted immunocytochemically with an antibody specific to fragment 17-24 of the published sequence of Alzheimer's amyloid peptide. In an effort to evaluate the role of apolipoprotein E in the formation of these abnormal structures, we examined the tibialis anterior muscle and the hippocampus of several groups of animals including: (i) apolipoprotein E "knockout" mice which had been whole body irradiated with 1200 rads and bone marrow replenished with apolipoprotein E sufficient marrow; and (ii) three transgenic murine strains that had been genetically engineered to express either human apolipoprotein E2, E3 or E4 protein on an apoE deficient background.

In 16 cases of 45 consecutive patients, following segmental right or left lobe hepatectomy, CT was performed in order to evaluate possible fluid collection or other complications. We have examined the histological and ultrastructural features of CNS infection with Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus in mice inoculated with a virulent parental strain (BH3479). Light microscopic examination revealed neuronal necrosis in the olfactory bulb and hippocampus of MVE-infected brains by 5 days post-infection (pi). Electron microscopy of these regions showed endoplasmic reticulum membrane proliferation, and tubular and spherical structures in the cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex and nuclear envelope.

Giant cell tumor of bone (GCT) is regarded as a rare primary bone neoplasm derived from stromal cells, which have the ability to recruit and harbor macrophage and multinucleated osteoclast-like giant cells. Despite being often considered benign, GCT is a problematic neoplasm in that it is aggressive, unpredictable and difficult to treat effectively. Cytogenetically GCT is characterised by a high frequency of telomeric fusion, a process which has been implicated in the production of chromosome instability and tumorigenesis.

It has been proposed that after mesothelial injury, resident cells within the subserosal connective tissue proliferate, differentiate, and migrate to the serosal surface. The aim of this study was to examine the temporal and spatial changes of proliferating cells in a murine model of testicular mesothelial healing and assess the potential of submesothelial cells to reconstitute the damaged mesothelium. Histology and autoradiography were employed to determine the number of cells within the submesothelial connective tissue, as well as the proportion of cells undergoing DNA synthesis on and beneath the injured serosa.

The effect of aging on host resistance to systemic candidosis was assessed by monitoring the course of infection in 16-month-old CBA/CaH mice (aged non-immune) and in a comparable group that had been infected with a sublethal dose of Candida albicans at 6 weeks of age (aged immune). Aged non-immune mice showed rapid progression of the disease, with a marked increase in the number of mycelia in the brain and kidney, and early morbidity. Foci of myocardial necrosis were evident, but inflammatory cells were sparse.

Clear cell adenocarcinoma of salivary glands (CCASG) is a relatively rare tumor, composed entirely of clear cells of putative ductal origin.
