Nutritional approach has been intensely investigated in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, but, despite many sparse reports, at present, there is not a universally accepted specific diet. In fact, nutritional requirements and, therefore, the ideal diet, may vary according to disease type, extension and activity. Among nutritional related issue in IBD, obesity has become a relevant one.

Long-Term Effectiveness and Safety of Ustekinumab in Crohn's Disease: Results from a Large Real-Life Cohort Study.

Ustekinumab (UST) is an interleukin-12/interleukin-23 receptor antagonist approved for the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD). Only limited real-life data on the long-term outcomes of CD patients treated with UST are available. This study assessed UST's long-term effectiveness and safety in a large population-based cohort of moderate to severe CD patients.

Stenosing Crohn's disease patients display gut autophagy/oxidative stress imbalance.

In this pilot study, we assessed the role of autophagy in Crohn's Disease (CD), particularly in patients with a stenosing phenotype. Through the analysis of biopsied specimens from 36 patients, including 11 controls and 25 CD patients, categorized into inflammatory and stenosing groups, we identified a significant reduction in the autophagosomal marker Lc3b-II in patients with active inflammation and stenosis. This was paralleled by an increase in oxidative stress markers, including sNOX2-dp and H2O2, and a decrease in the antioxidant capacity measured by HBA, suggesting an imbalance in autophagy and oxidative stress mechanisms.

However, given the concerns of health-conscious consumers and the potential toxicity of synthetic substances, this study aimed to explore the use of fennel waste extracts as natural preservatives. This study characterized the bioactive compounds (phenolic content), the antioxidant activity (ABTS and DPPH assay), and the antimicrobial properties (against serotype Enteritidis, , , and ) of different fennel waste extracts (LF, liquid fraction; SF, solid fraction and PF, pellet fraction).

Ischemia-free liver transplant with the potential to avoid ischemiareperfusion injury and related complications, particularly early allograft dysfunction, could positively encourage the use of marginal donorlivers and extend the donor pool. Here, we describe the first case in a Western country of ischemia-free liver transplant of a marginal donor liver.

Fat overload syndrome following intravenous lipid emulsion administration as antidote in suspected anesthetic intoxication: insights from a clinical and forensic case experience.

Medication errors pose significant risks to patients' health, representing a relevant social and economic issue for the healthcare system. This study focuses on the life-threatening consequences of an overdose of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE), used as an antidote for suspected bupivacaine intoxication in a young woman undergoing hip surgery. Shortly after administration of the local anesthetic, the woman experienced cardiac arrest and was admitted to the intensive care unit with severe respiratory failure, metabolic acidosis and deep coma.

Serum Vascular Adhesion Protein-1 and Endothelial Dysfunction in Hepatic Cirrhosis: Searching for New Prognostic Markers.

Endothelial dysfunction plays a key role in the development of liver cirrhosis. Among the biomarkers of endothelial dysfunction, the soluble form of Vascular Adhesion Protein-1 (sVAP-1) is an unconventional and less known adhesion molecule endowed also with amine oxidase activity. The aim of this study was to explore and correlate the behavior of sVAP-1 with that of the soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and with the severity of liver cirrhosis.

The present retrospective observational study aims to identify differences in clinical features and peripheral biomarkers among patients affected by substance-induced psychotic disorder (SIPD) according to the primary substance of abuse. A sample of 218 patients was divided into three groups according to the type of consumed substance: alcohol, cannabis, and psychostimulants. The three groups were compared using one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs) for continuous variables and χ tests for qualitative variables.

These emerging risks, which endanger both human and animal health and the entire poultry industry, can be effectively limited by biosecurity measures implemented at human-animal food chain interfaces. Some problems, however, persist in the application of these measures on the part of poultry farmers, prompting the need to explore those aspects and causes that limit their implementation.
