Article Synopsis
  • Predictors of severe COVID-19 cases, specifically the ROX index, were analyzed in a study involving 227 patients hospitalized in Italy during the second pandemic wave, focusing on its ability to predict treatment failures like intubation or death.
  • The study found that older age, history of smoking, cardiovascular diseases, and a lower PaO2/FiO2 ratio at admission were linked to a higher likelihood of treatment failure.
  • The predictive value of the ROX index improved by the third day of hospitalization, with a critical cut-off value of 8.53 indicating a greater risk of treatment failure in patients on days 1 to 3.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with severe asthma often suffer from chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), which can worsen symptoms and complicate treatment; this study examines the effects of biologic treatments on quality of life for these patients.
  • The research involved analyzing patient data before and after treatment with biologics (omalizumab, mepolizumab, benralizumab, dupilumab) over 12 months, measuring improvements in quality of life indicators.
  • Results showed significant improvements in CRS-related quality of life and asthma control after 3, 6, and 12 months of treatment, particularly with dupilumab, emphasizing the benefit of targeting type 2 inflammation in these patients.

Introduction: Patients with central neoplasms and haemoptysis show low survival rates. Symptom control without recurrence 48 h after bronchoscopic interventions may improve the prognosis of these patients. Bronchoscopic argon plasma coagulation (APC) is a useful technique for endobronchial management of haemoptysis in patients with central malignancies.

Article Synopsis
  • - Tracheal diverticulum is a rare, benign condition often associated with tracheobronchomegaly (TBM), a disorder known for the dilation of the trachea and bronchi, which can weaken the trachea and lead to complications like mucosal herniation.
  • - A reported case involved a patient with TBM who had the largest recorded tracheal diameter for this syndrome, diagnosed using bronchoscopy and 3D CT reconstruction.
  • - Diagnosing tracheal diverticulum is important in patients with chronic cough and bronchial infections, and it must be differentiated from other conditions like laryngocele and Zenker's diverticulum, with bronchoscopy and CT being effective diagnostic

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by neutrophilic airway inflammation and oxidative stress. Leukotriene B₄ (LTB₄), a potent proinflammatory mediator, is synthesized by 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), which is activated by the presence of lipid hydroperoxides resulting from oxidative stress on biological membranes. We proposed to evaluate the effect of a four week treatment with two different bronchodilators of common practice in COPD treatment, on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), in particular superoxide anions, and of LTB₄ by peripheral blood neutrophils obtained from COPD subjects.

Unlabelled: The cardiovascular component associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) plays a major role in disease prognosis, accounting for 25% of the deaths. Experimental and initial clinical data suggest that beta-adrenergic agonists accelerate fluid clearance from the alveolar airspace, with potentially positive effects on cardiogenic and noncardiogenic pulmonary oedema. This pilot study investigated the acute effects of the long-acting beta-2 agonist, salmeterol, on alveolar fluid clearance after rapid saline intravenous infusion by evaluating diffusive and mechanical lung properties.

Background: We investigated the correlation between patients' characteristics, including anxiety and depression, and the level of asthma control evaluated by asthma control test (ACT), a self-administered validated questionnaire.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study on asthmatic outpatients of three Italian hospitals. Demographic data, spirometry, anxiety and depression scores as well as the level of asthma control from 315 patients were collected.
