Anthocyanins are a group of naturally occuring phenolic compounds related to the coloring of plants, flowers and fruits. These pigments are important as quality indicators, as chemotaxonomic markers and for their antioxidant activities. Here, we have investigated the therapeutic efficacy of anthocyanins contained in blackberry extract (cyanidin-3-O-glucoside represents about 80% of the total anthocyanin contents) in an experimental model of lung inflammation induced by carrageenan in rats.

The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of ligand-dependent transcription factors related to retinoid, steroid and thyroid hormone receptors. The thiazolidinedione rosiglitazone and the endogenous cyclopentenone prostaglandin (PG)D2 metabolite, 15-deoxy-Delta12,14-PGJ2 (15d-PGJ2), are two PPAR-gamma ligands, which modulate the transcription of target genes.

Intraperitoneal injection of cerulein in mice resulted in severe, acute pancreatitis characterized by oedema, neutrophil infiltration and necrosis and elevated serum levels of amylase and lipase. Infiltration of pancreatic and lung tissue with neutrophils (measured as increase in myeloperoxidase activity) was associated with enhanced lipid peroxidation (increased tissue levels of malondialdehyde).

SAO shock was induced in mice by clamping both the superior mesenteric artery and the celiac artery for 30 min, followed thereafter by release of the clamp (reperfusion). At 120 min after reperfusion, animals were sacrificed for histological examination and biochemical studies.

Methods: Three groups of subjects with comparable age, sex and body surface area were analyzed: 25 with beta-thalassemia major (group A), 14 with thalassemia intermedia (group B) and 10 healthy subjects (group C).

Macrolides are considered one of the safest anti-infective groups in clinical use and are well-tolerated as alternative antibiotics in patients with a previous adverse reaction to other classes of antibiotics. However there is scarce information in the literature about their long-term tolerability. The present study was performed to determine whether the results of a challenge test with rokitamycin could predict the response to ingestion of rokitamycin during illness.

Dithiocarbamates are anti-oxidants which are potent inhibitors of NF-kappaB. We postulated that pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) would attenuate multiple-organ failure (MOF).

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by oxidative and nitrosative stress, leukocyte infiltration, and increased expression of the adhesion molecules intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) in the colon. Recent evidence also suggests that the cyclopentenone prostaglandin (PG) 15-deoxy-delta(12,14)-PGJ(2) (15d- PGJ(2)) functions as an early anti-inflammatory signal.

In different experimental paradigms we have recently demonstrated that estrogen exhibits antiinflammatory activity by preventing the induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and other components of the inflammatory reaction. To verify whether this could explain the estrogen-dependent blockade of osteoporosis, we investigated the effect of ovariectomy in mice in which iNOS activity had been blunted by genetic or pharmacological manipulation.

We evaluated whether insulin signaling modulates plasma cell glycoprotein (PC-1) plasma membrane recruitment, posttranslational processing, and gene expression in human cultured cell lines. Insulin induced a fourfold increase (P < 0.01) of membrane PC-1 expression by rapid and sensitive mechanism(s).

Resistin is, therefore, a candidate gene for insulin resistance. We searched for polymorphisms in the resistin gene by single strand conformation polymorphism and direct sequencing.

Here we investigate the effects of 1,11b-dihydro-[2H]benzopyrano [4,3,2-de]isoquinolin-3-one (GPI 6150), a new poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor, in animal models of experimental colitis. Colitis was induced in rats by intra-colonic instillation of dinitrobenzene sulfonic acid.

Adiponectin is a protein secreted by adipocytes that modulates insulin action. To assess whether variants of this gene contribute to the prevalence of insulin resistance in Caucasians, we genotyped 413 nondiabetic individuals for two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at this locus. The two SNPs (45T-->G and 276G-->T) were chosen because of their association with type 2 diabetes in Japanese.

To date laboratory tests for the diagnosis of these adverse reactions are not available. A patient with an adverse drug reaction to NSAIDs needs an alternative drug to assume if necessary.

Multiple Drug Allergy Syndrome (MDAS) is a frequent clinical condition characterized by reactions to more than one different class of antibiotics. Even if some studies have previously reported an increased rate of allergic reactions to drugs in patients with a history of antimicrobials and NSAIDs allergy, risk factors and pathogenesis of MDAS are still object of investigation. Moreover, in these subjects it is often difficult to prescribe a safe alternative antibiotic without a tolerance test.
