Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated how encapsulated nitrate products (ENP) and monensin (MON) affect enteric methane (CH4) emissions and rumen fermentation.
  • Six different treatments were tested using a mix of Tifton-85 hay and a concentrate of corn and soybean meal, altering ENP and MON levels without noticeable interaction between them.
  • Findings revealed that while ENP significantly reduced CH4 production, neither ENP nor MON affected organic matter degradation or methanogen levels, indicating that ENP alone is effective for CH4 reduction without enhancing the effect of MON.

When vocalizations transmit throughout the environment, attenuation and degradation may change the information of the signal; the loss of information is related to changes in both frequency and duration of vocalizations. The variation in frequency and duration of bird calls is related to the functions of each call type. Using a sound transmission experiment, the authors tested the transmission properties of two call types both produced by white-eared ground-sparrows Melozone leucotis; these calls vary in frequency and duration, suggesting that they may transmit at different distances.
