Background: Currently, there is a lack of data concerning the organization and characteristics of Italian pediatric physiotherapy units for the treatment of patients with chronic lung diseases, especially those with rare conditions such as Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) and non-Cystic Fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB).
Methods: A national descriptive study based on a survey questionnaire was conducted. The questionnaire consisted of three different sections: distribution and characteristics of the centres, services provided by respiratory therapists, physiotherapists' perception of the unit.
Astrocytes play important roles in the central nervous system (CNS) during health and disease. Prior studies have shown that gut commensal-derived indole derivatives as well as secondary bile acids modulate astrocyte function during the late stage of EAE (recovery phase). Here we showed that administering vancomycin to mice starting during the early stage of EAE improved disease recovery, an effect that is mediated by the gut microbiota.

A reduced NAA signature is a prominent early pathological biomarker in multiple neurodegenerative diseases and becomes progressively more pronounced as disease advances. Background: Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by insensitivity to pain, inability to sweat and intellectual disability. CIPA is caused by mutations in the neurotrophic tyrosine kinase receptor type 1 gene (NTRK1) that encodes the high-affinity receptor of nerve growth factor (NGF).
Case Presentation: Here, we present clinical and molecular findings in a 9-year-old girl with CIPA.
Telomere maintenance mechanisms (TMM) are used by cancer cells to avoid apoptosis, 85-90% reactivate telomerase, while 10-15% use the alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT). Due to anti-telomerase-based treatments, some tumors switch from a telomerase-dependent mechanism to ALT; in fact, the co-existence between both mechanisms has been observed in some cancers. Although different elements in the ALT pathway are uncovered, some molecular mechanisms are still poorly understood.
