Objectives/hypothesis: This study's aim was to verify whether, in patients affected by sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) with high plasmatic levels of low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and/or fibrinogen, the therapeutic approach with a single selective plasmapheresis (HELP-apheresis) followed by 10 days of standard treatment (glycerol and dexamethazone) is more effective than 10 days of standard treatment.

Study Design: Randomized, superiority study (difference >or=30%).

Methods: One hundred thirty-two patients were admitted to the trial and randomly allocated to two different arms; 60 were given standard treatment and 72 were treated with HELP-apheresis plus standard treatment.

The objective of our study was to describe the burden of a sample of 208 live-in/non-live-in caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). We analyzed the statistical correlation between Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI) and the live-in/non-live-in caregiver status, and between the ''objective burden,'' the cognitive deterioration, functional ability, and psychic and behavioral disorders. Using analysis of variance (ANOVA), the live-in groups of caregivers were compared to each subscale and to the total CBI.

Article Synopsis
  • Long-term care units cater to frail elderly individuals facing multiple ongoing health issues and require comprehensive medical and rehabilitation support that cannot be provided outside of a hospital setting.
  • A study involving 297 patients revealed significant functional impairments, with many losing the ability to perform about five daily activities, largely influenced by age, comorbidities, and cognitive decline, particularly in cases of dementia.
  • Results indicated that nearly half of discharged patients were able to return home with a caregiver, highlighting the need for better integration of long-term care within the broader healthcare system to ensure continuous care for these vulnerable populations.
