Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that increases the risk of complications in pregnancy. SLE flares during pregnancy are attributed to higher levels of estrogen and other cytokines. A 34-year-old woman with SLE, who had undergone in vitro fertilization (IVF), was diagnosed with a lupus flare at 14 weeks of gestation.
