The present work describes the synthesis of new terpyridine (tpy) molecules possessing functionalized long alkyl chains at the 4'-position associated with a planar structure with considerable delocalization. Out of the three synthesized tpy derivatives (L1, L2, and L3), L2 containing an ester group at the end of the alkyl chain emerged as an excellent probe for the selective detection of Zn. The detection of Zn ions under biological conditions was achieved by the introduction of a distinct aliphatic undecanoic ester chain at the 4'-position of the core terpyridine ring, thereby making it more lipophilic.

The present work demonstrates the synthesis, structural diversity and coordination behavior of some selected new Ni(II)-Tpy complexes. The structural analysis revealed the coordination of the selected terpyridine ligands with the core metal atom in two different modes via dimeric species (1:1 fashion) through the Cl-bridging and a bis(Tpy)-Ni complex (2:1 fashion). Perhaps the most striking manifestations of these Ni(II)-Tpy complexes are BSA/DNA binding ability and anticancer activity.

Objective: This study aimed to describe the clinical presentation, microbiological profile and management of complications of bone wax usage for surgical procedures at the skull base.

Method: The case records of a series of five patients who developed post-operative surgical site complications because of bone wax usage during skull base surgery were reviewed.

Relative to drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines, efforts to develop other global health technologies, such as medical devices, are limited and often focus on the short-term goal of prototype development instead of the long-term goal of a sustainable business model. To develop a medical device to address neonatal hypothermia for use in resource-limited settings, we turned to principles of design theory: (1) define the problem with consideration of appropriate integration into relevant health policies, (2) identify the users of the technology and the scenarios in which the technology would be used, and (3) use a highly iterative product design and development process that incorporates the perspective of the user of the technology at the outset and addresses scalability. In contrast to our initial idea, to create a single device, the process guided us to create two separate devices, both strikingly different from current solutions.

A cotraining-based approach is introduced for constructing high-performance classifiers for P300-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which were trained from very little data. It uses two classifiers: Fisher's linear discriminant analysis and Bayesian linear discriminant analysis progressively teaching each other to build a final classifier, which is robust and able to learn effectively from unlabeled data. Detailed analysis of the performance is carried out through extensive cross-validations, and it is shown that the proposed approach is able to build high-performance classifiers from just a few minutes of labeled data and by making efficient use of unlabeled data.
