We explored in 75 s long trials the effects of visually induced self-rotation and displacement (SR&D) on the horizontally extended right arm of standing subjects (N = 12). A "tool condition" was included in which subjects held a long rod. The extent of arm movement was contingent on whether the arm was extended out Freely or Pointing at a briefly proprioceptively specified target position.

Current strategies to undermine the deleterious influence of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in the tumor microenvironment (TME) are lacking effective clinical solutions, in large part, due to insufficient knowledge on susceptible cellular and molecular targets. We describe here the application of biomimetic microfabricated platforms designed to analyze migratory phenotypes of MDSCs in the tumor niche ex vivo, which may enable accelerated therapeutic discovery. By mimicking the guided structural cues present in the physiological architecture of the TME, aligned microtopography substrates can elucidate potential interventions on migratory phenotypes of MDSCs at the single clonal level.

Vestibular information is available to the brain during navigation, as are the other self-generated (idiothetic) and external (allothetic) sensorimotor cues that contribute to central estimates of position and motion. Rodent studies provide strong evidence that vestibular information contributes to navigation but human studies have been less conclusive. Furthermore, sex-based differences have been described in human navigation studies performed with the head stationary, a situation where dynamic vestibular (and other idiothetic) information is absent, but sex differences in the utilization of vestibular information have not been described.

Spaceflight can make astronauts susceptible to spatial disorientation which is one of the leading causes of fatal aircraft accidents. In our experiment, blindfolded participants used a joystick to balance themselves while inside a multi-axis rotation device (MARS) in either the vertical or horizontal roll plane. On Day 1, in the vertical roll plane (Earth analog condition) participants could use gravitational cues and therefore had a good sense of their orientation.

Tumor-associated immune cells play a crucial role in cancer progression. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), for example, are immature innate immune cells that infiltrate the tumor to exert immunosuppressive activity and protect cancer cells from the host's immune system and/or cancer-specific immunotherapies. While tumor-associated immune cells have emerged as a promising therapeutic target, efforts to counter immunosuppression within the tumor niche have been hampered by the lack of approaches that selectively target the immune cell compartment of the tumor, to effectively eliminate "tumor-protecting" immune cells and/or drive an "anti-tumor" phenotype.

Purpose: Ureteroenteric anastomosis after cystectomy is usually performed using the Bricker or Wallace technique. Deterioration of renal function is the most common long-term complication of urinary diversion (UD). To improve surgical care and optimize long-term renal function, we compared the Bricker and Wallace anastomotic techniques and identified risk factors for ureteroenteric strictures (UES) in patients after cystectomy.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as a promising carrier system for the delivery of therapeutic payloads in multiple disease models, including cancer. However, effective targeting of EVs to cancerous tissue remains a challenge. Here, it is shown that nonviral transfection of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) can be leveraged to drive targeted release of engineered EVs that can modulate transfer and overexpression of therapeutic anticancer genes in tumor cells and tissue.

Various types of human cancers were characterized by an altered expression of epithelial or stromal caveolin-1 (CAV1). However, the clinical significance of CAV1 expression in penile cancer remains largely unknown. Here the expression patterns of CAV1 were analyzed in a retrospective cohort (n=43) of penile squamous cell carcinomas (SCC).

Article Synopsis
  • Temsirolimus has been the standard treatment for poor-risk patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), but the FLIPPER study explored the effectiveness of pazopanib as an alternative first-line treatment.
  • The trial included 60 treatment-naive patients and aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of daily oral pazopanib in this patient group, focusing on six-month progression-free survival as the primary outcome.
  • Results showed a 35.3% six-month progression-free survival rate, median overall survival of 9.3 months, and a manageable safety profile, suggesting pazopanib is a viable first-line option for poor-risk mRCC patients.

Myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) have gained significant attention for their immunosuppressive role in cancer and their ability to contribute to tumor progression and metastasis. Understanding the role of MDSCs in driving cancer cell migration, a process fundamental to metastasis, is essential to fully comprehend and target MDSC-tumor cell interactions. This study employs microfabricated platforms, which simulate the structural cues present in the tumor microenvironment (TME) to elucidate the effects of MDSCs on the migratory phenotype of cancer cells at the single cell level.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are immune cells that exert immunosuppression within the tumor, protecting cancer cells from the host's immune system and/or exogenous immunotherapies. While current research has been mostly focused in countering MDSC-driven immunosuppression, little is known about the mechanisms by which MDSCs disseminate/infiltrate cancerous tissue. This study looks into the use of microtextured surfaces, coupled with in vitro and in vivo cellular and molecular analysis tools, to videoscopically evaluate the dissemination patterns of MDSCs under structurally guided migration, at the single-cell level.

Meyer-Weigert-Rule predicts the draining pattern of duplex ureters in bipolar renal duplications. The upper pole is normally seen as ectopic and therefore dysplastic due to obstruction, whereas the lower pole is related to vesicoureteral reflux. In our case, this rule is violated with uncrossed ureter duplex and a dysplastic lower pole in connection with obstruction.

Tumour resistance to chemo- and radiotherapy, as well as molecularly targeted therapies, limits the effectiveness of current cancer treatments. We previously reported that the radiation response of human prostate tumours is critically regulated by CAV1 expression in stromal fibroblasts and that loss of stromal CAV1 expression in advanced tumour stages may contribute to tumour radiotherapy resistance. Here we investigated whether fibroblast secreted anti-apoptotic proteins could induce radiation resistance of prostate cancer cells in a CAV1-dependent manner and identified TRIAP1 (TP53 Regulated Inhibitor of Apoptosis 1) as a resistance-promoting CAV1-dependent factor.

17β-Estradiol (E2) is known to negatively regulate inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase (iNOS) expression via estrogen receptor alpha (ER-α) activation in aortic vascular smooth muscle cells. Therefore, we sought to determine whether E2 can inhibit iNOS in hepatic tissue via the activation of ER-α and whether extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2)-miR-221 axis is involved in this process. Male Wistar rats were treated with a bolus injection of E2 intraperitoneally (40 μg/kg), and 24 hours after treatment the animals were sacrificed and the livers excised.
