Zinc deficiency has been linked to human diseases, including cancer. MDMX, a crucial zinc-containing negative regulator of p53, has been found to be amplified or overexpressed in various cancers and implicated in the cancer initiation and progression. We report here that zinc depletion by the ion chelator TPEN or Chelex resin results in MDMX protein degradation in a ubiquitination-independent and 20S proteasome-dependent manner.

Tyramide signal amplification (TSA) is an enzyme-mediated method to enhance the immunohistochemical detection of protein, nucleic acid, or other molecules in situ. Here we describe immunofluorescent detection of a low-abundance cytokine receptor, interleukin-17 receptor B (IL17RB) in U2OS cells, using tyramide signal amplification. In addition, we present a tyramide signal amplification compatible double-color immunostaining protocol using primary antibodies from the same host species.

Uncomplicated skin infections account for almost 200 million physician-office visits in the USA annually. Treating these infections is estimated to cost in excess of US$350 million each year. The primary etiology of these infections is Staphylococcus aureus, over 60% of which is estimated to be methicillin resistant across the USA.

The tensile and tear strength of carrageenan film from Philippines Eucheuma species were investigated using NEC tensilon universal-testing machine according to American Society for Testing Materials methods. These properties are important for assessing carrageenan film as packaging material. The kappa and iota types were used in the study.

Two new cyclodepsipeptides have been isolated from a population of the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula collected at Piti Bomb Holes, Guam. They appear to be unique to this particular Guamanian collection and have been named pitipeptolides A (1) and B (2). Their structures have been elucidated by spectroscopic techniques and by characterization of degradation products.

Background: To measure real time intraocular pressure (IOP) during keratomileusis and to determine variability of corneal flap thickness by using different suction ring pressure settings.

Methods: Eight human cadaver eyes, two groups of four each, were used. The suction ring of the UniversalKeratome was applied to each eye, the same as for a standard automated lamellar keratoplasty (ALK) or laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) procedure, to create a lamellar corneal flap.

Soil conditions essential to the survival of Oncomelania quadrasi on Bohol Island in the Philippines were examined to clarify the factors limiting distribution of the snail and to develop a method for breeding large numbers of the snail in the laboratory. Soil samples in and around snail habitats were analysed and used for breeding experiments in the laboratory. Experiments using paddy soil derived from different parent materials revealed that the numbers of juvenile snails hatched varied widely between several soil samples.

In the endemic area of schistosomiasis on Bohol Island, we succeeded in locating seven new colonies of the vector snail, Oncomelania quadrasi, four in Trinidad and three in Talibon, in addition to six locations from which the snails were previously recorded. We were led by the proximity of the snail habitat to the residence of the infected individuals. In northern Bohol the continuous wet season would appear to make the major differences between the places that do and those that do not support O.
