Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance, particularly plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production, in gram-negative bacteria found in urine samples from first-time pregnant women.
  • Out of 1,841 urine samples collected, significant bacterial growth was found in 133 samples, with a majority being Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, revealing high rates of ESBL positivity and resistance to multiple antibiotics.
  • The findings highlight a concerning level of multi-drug resistance in urinary tract infections among primigravid women, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and addressing this growing threat to public health.

Flow-through assay (FTA) is a rapid, simple-to-perform, cost-effective, and user-friendly diagnostic test for monitoring infections in non-laboratory settings. It is mostly applied for antibody detection. FTA employing protein-A colloidal gold conjugate to detect antibodies against porcine cysticerci using cyst fluid and whole cyst antigens of Taenia solium metacestode is described here.
