The serotonin type 3 (5-HT(3)) receptor is unique among the seven recognized serotonin receptor "families". The existence serotonin type 3 receptor (5-HT(3)) in neuro-anatomical regions stimulated the research interest for novel therapeutic targets such as anxiety, depression, nociception and cognitive function. In the current study, (4-benzylpiperazin-1-yl) (quinoxalin-2-yl) methanone (QCF-3), a novel 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist, with an optimal log P (the logarithm of the ratio of the concentrations of the un-ionized solute in the solvents is called log P) and significant pA2 value (is a negative logarithm of the molar concentration of antagonist required to reduce the effect of multiple dose agonist to that of single dose) was screened for its anti-depressant potential using rodent behavioral models of depression.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate different Indian riverine buffalo breeds (Bubalus bubalis) for mutation drift equilibrium and occurrence of any recent genetic bottleneck. A total of 330 animals from seven different breeds were analyzed with a set of 24 heterologous microsatellite markers. Three different tests revealed significant heterozygosity excess in all the seven buffalo breeds studied when assumed under infinite alleles model of microsatellite evolution, while it was the reverse with no significant heterozygosity excess when assumed under conservative stepwise mutation model.

Problem/condition: Each year, approximately 795,000 persons in the United States experience a new or recurrent stroke. Data from the prototype phase (2001-2004) of the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Registry (PCNASR) suggested that numerous acute stroke patients did not receive treatment according to established guidelines.

Reporting Period: This report summarizes PCNASR data collected during 2005-2007 from Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, and North Carolina, the first states to have PCNASRs implemented in and led by state health departments.

Collective evidence suggests that inhibition of neuronal 5-hydroxytryptamine type 2A (5-HT(2A)) receptors contributes to the assuagement of depression-like behaviour in rodents. The present study evaluated the antidepressant-like effect of the 5-((4-benzo [alpha] isothiazol-3-yl) piperazin-1-yl) methyl)-6-chloroindolin-2-one (BIP-1), a compound having affinity to 5-HT(2A) receptors, using a rodent behavioural test battery. Acute BIP-1 (0.

The aim of this study was to characterise the molecular mechanisms of transcriptional regulation of Differentially Expressed Genes (DEGs) in rice coleoptiles under anoxia by identifying motifs that are common in the promoter region of co-regulated genes. Un-changed DEGs (<2 fold and >-2), up-regulated DEGs (>or=2 fold) and down-regulated DEGs ( View Article and Find Full Text PDF

Traumatic pulmonary pseudocyst is a rare clinical event that may occur following chest trauma. This complication usually occurs as a result of blunt trauma and rarely, due to a penetrating injury. We report an unusual case of a 10-year-old boy who developed a left-sided pneumothorax along with a traumatic pulmonary pseudocyst when he was hit by a cricket ball while playing.

Depression and anxiety tend to be the most prevalent conditions among the multitude of neurobehavioural disorders which cause distress in the survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The objective of the present investigation was to examine depression-like and anxiety-like behaviour of rats following diffuse TBI. Impact accelerated TBI was induced in anaesthetised rats by a modified weight drop method.

First examples of heteroleptic arene ruthenium complexes containing dipyrrin ligands with the general formulations [(eta(6)-arene)RuCl(L)] [(arene = C(6)H(6), C(10)H(14); L = 5-(4-cyanophenyl)-dipyrromethene, cydpm; 5-(4-nitrophenyl)-dipyrromethene, ndpm and 5-(4-benzyloxyphenyl)-dipyrromethene, bdpm] have been synthesized. The complexes [(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))RuCl(L)] (L = ndpm and cydpm) reacted with NaN(3) and NH(4)SCN to afford neutral mononuclear complexes [(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))Ru(N(3))(L)] and [(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))Ru(SCN)(L)]. Their reactions with EPh(3) (E = P, As) and exobidentate ditopic P-P and N-N donor ligands, namely, bis-(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) and 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy) in the presence of AgSO(3)CF(3) afforded cationic mono- and binuclear complexes [(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))Ru(L)(EPh(3))]SO(3)CF(3), [{(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))Ru(L)}(2)(mu-dppm)](SO(3)CF(3))(2), and [{(eta(6)-C(10)H(14))Ru(L)}(2)(mu-bpy)](SO(3)CF(3))(2), respectively.

In platelets stimulated by thrombin to secrete and aggregate, cofilin is rapidly dephosphorylated leading to its activation. Cofilin by severing existing actin filaments and stimulating F-actin polymerization on newly created barbed ends dynamizes the actin cytoskeleton. We previously found that cofilin dephosphorylation is Ca(2+)-dependent and occurs upstream of degranulation in stimulated platelets.

Estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha) is a ligand-regulated transcription factor with a broad range of physiological functions and one of the most important classifiers in breast cancer. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that have emerged as important regulators of gene expression in a plethora of physiological and pathological processes. Upon binding the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of target mRNAs, miRNAs typically reduce their stability and/or translation.

Nanocrystalline powders of Zn(1-x)Co(x)O synthesized by the coprecipitation technique show anomalous anisotropic broadening for x>0.05. This peak broadening is shown to be not only due to a reduction in the particle size but also due to a significant strain contribution, as confirmed by Williamson-Hall analysis.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a fulminant disease characterized by platelet aggregates, thrombocytopenia, renal insufficiency, neurologic changes, and mechanical injury to erythrocytes. Most idiopathic cases of TTP are characterized by a deficiency of ADAMTS13 (a disintegrin and metalloprotease, with thrombospondin-1-like domains) metalloprotease activity. Ironically, use of anti-platelet agents, the thienopyridine derivates clopidogrel and ticlopidine, is associated with drug induced TTP.

The steroid hormone oestrogen can signal through several receptors and pathways. Although the transcriptional responses mediated by the nuclear oestrogen receptors (ER) have been extensively characterized, the changes in gene expression elicited by signalling through the membrane-associated ER GPR30 have not been studied. We show here for ER-negative human breast cancer cells that the activation of GPR30 signalling by oestrogen or by hydroxytamoxifen (OHT), an ER antagonist but GPR30 agonist, induces a transcription factor network, which resembles that induced by serum in fibroblasts.

In the title compound, [Cu(C(7)H(3)NO(4))(C(5)H(5)N)](n), the Cu(II) atom is in a slightly distorted octa-hedral coordination environment. Each Cu(II) atom is bound to two N atoms and one O atom of the pyridine-dicarboxyl-ate (PDA) ligand in a tridentate manner, one N atom of the pyridine mol-ecule and two bridging carboxyl-ate O atoms of adjacent PDA ligands, leading to a linear one-dimensional chain running along the c axis. These chains are further assembled via weak C-H⋯O and π-π inter-actions into a three-dimensional supra-molecular network structure.
