- Twenty-four pregnant rats were divided into four groups: one control and three receiving ferrous sulphate at different stages of pregnancy (1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters), with effects measured on serum iron and hepcidin levels.
- Results showed that giving ferrous sulphate in the 3rd trimester significantly increased serum iron and hepcidin levels while decreasing total iron binding capacity compared to earlier trimesters.
- Overall, early supplementation leads to improved iron management during pregnancy.
