Organic and metal-free molecules with piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties have gained wide interest for their applications in the domain of mechanical energy harvesting due to their desirable properties such as light weight, thermal stability, mechanical flexibility, feasibility to achieve high Curie temperatures, and ease of synthesis. However, the understanding and design of these materials for piezoelectric energy harvesting applications is still in its early stages. This review paper presents a comprehensive overview of the fundamental characterization of piezoelectricity for a range of organic ferro- and piezoelectric materials and their composites.

Ionic cocrystals with hydrogen bonding can form exciting materials with enhanced optical and electronic properties. We present a highly moisture-stable ammonium salt cocrystal [CHCHCH(CH)NH][CHCHCH(CH)NH][PF] () crystallizing in the polar monoclinic 2 space group. The asymmetry in was induced by its chiral substituents, while the polar order and structural stability were achieved by using the octahedral PF anion and the consequent formation of salt cocrystal.

The deregulation of splicing factors and alternative splicing are increasingly viewed as major contributory factors in tumorigenesis. In this study, we report overexpression of a key splicing factor, heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A2B1 (HNRNPA2B1), and thereby misregulation of alternative splicing, which is associated with the poor prognosis of head and neck cancer (HNC). The histone modifiers (HMs) are crucial for chromatin dynamics and gene expression; however, their dysregulated expression has been observed in various abnormalities including cancer. In this study, we have analyzed the expression of HMs in microarray profiles of head and neck cancer (HNC), wherein a highly significant overexpression of p21-activated kinase 2 (PAK2) was identified which was further validated in HNC patients. The elevated expression of PAK2 positively correlated with enhanced cell proliferation, aerobic glycolysis and chemoresistance and was associated with the poor clinical outcome of HNC patients.

Aberrant alternative splicing and epigenetic changes are both associated with various cancers, but epigenetic regulation of alternative splicing in cancer is largely unknown. Here we report that the intragenic DNA methylation-mediated binding of Brother of Regulator of Imprinted Sites (BORIS) at the alternative exon of Pyruvate Kinase () is associated with cancer-specific splicing that promotes the Warburg effect and breast cancer progression. Interestingly, the inhibition of DNA methylation, BORIS depletion, or CRISPR/Cas9-mediated deletion of the BORIS binding site leads to a splicing switch from cancer-specific to normal isoform.

We have determined the gene expression of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) metabolizing enzymes (SphK1, SphK2, SGPL1, SGPP1, SGPP2, PPAP2A, PPAP2B, and PPAP2C) by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in tumor tissues and adjacent normal tissues of 50 oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients. Expression of SphK1 and SGPP1 genes was up-regulated significantly in 70% and 75% OSCC tumors respectively. Importantly, expression of SphK2 and PPAP2B was down-regulated in the tumor tissues of 70% OSCC patients.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been extensively explored in a variety of regenerative medicine applications. The relatively large size of MSCs expanded in tissue culture flasks leads to retention in the microcirculation of the lungs following intravenous delivery, reducing their capacity to reach target sites.
