In this study, the effect of the addition of silicon carbide to alumina ceramics commonly used in cutting tool applications is addressed. Performance of AlO-SiC composite cutting inserts during the machining of hardened steels and ductile iron was compared to the results obtained for a cutting tool made out of 99 wt.% AlO, AlO-TiC, AlO-TiC-ZrO, and AlO-TiN.

[The detection of the human papilloma virus during hyperplastic processes in the nose, ears and throat].

The objective of the present work was to carry out the virological and histological studies of various neoplastic and hyperplastic processes in the nose, ears, and throat with a view to identifying the presence of human papilloma virus and Epstein-Barr virus. The brush biopsies and remote neoplasms obtained from 18 patients (including 2 children and 16 adults) presenting with various ENT diseases and tumours were available for the virological investigation with the use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a system MY09-MY11 degenerate primers . The histological study of biopsies and remote neoplasms was carried out by means of conventional light microscopy.

Cu(I)-catalyzed N,N'-diarylation of natural diamines and polyamines with aryl iodides.

The Cu(I)-catalyzed N,N'-diarylation of natural diamines and polyamines such as putrescine, cadaverine, spermine, spermidine and their homologues is described. Aryl iodides bearing electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups have been employed in the study. The CuI/2-(isobutyryl)cyclohexanone/DMF catalytic system has found to be more efficient in the diarylation of diamines and spermine while the CuI/L-proline/EtCN system proved to be preferable for the diarylation of other tri- and tetraamines like spermidine, norspermidine and norspermine.

Comparison of theoretical fixation stability of three devices employed in medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy: a finite element analysis.

Background: Medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy is a well-established procedure for the treatment of unicompartmental osteoarthritis and symptomatic varus malalignment. We hypothesized that different fixation devices generate different fixation stability profiles for the various wedge sizes in a finite element (FE) analysis.

Methods: Four types of fixation were compared: 1) first and 2) second generation Puddu plates, and 3) TomoFix plate with and 4) without bone graft.

[Microbial contamination of penile tissues as a risk factor for complications in the treatment of hypospadia].

Biopsy of the skin, fascia and urethra was performed in 29 cases of urethroplasty for hypospadia in children and adults. The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (n=14) with primary plastic urethra and group 2 (n=15) with secondary urethroplasty of hypospadia with complication. Tissue samples were examined microbiologically and morphologically.

[Experimental sensorineural loss of hearing of ototoxic origin in animals: apoptotic mechanism of cell death in the spiral organ].

This morphological study was carried out using white rats with experimental sensorineural loss of hearing. A method for simulation of ototoxic loss of hearing in laboratory animals is proposed. Investigations with the use of light microscopy revealed elements of the apoptotic mechanism of cell death in the spiral organ of rats with sensorineural loss of hearing.

[Results of clinical trials on reactogenicity, safety, and immunogenicity of influenza allantoic intranasal live vaccine "Ultragrivac" (type A/H5N2)].

Results of phase II of a clinical trial of the influenza allantoic intranasal live vaccine "Ultragrivac" (type A/H5N2) are presented. The vaccine was developed based on strain /17/Duck/Potsdam/86/92 H5N2 [17/H5] - reassortant of two viruses, /Leningrad/134/17/57 (H2N2) and /Duck/Potsdam/1402-86 (H5N2), obtained from the Virology Department, St. Petersburg Institute of Experimental Medicine.

Environmental radioactivity studies and regulatory issues.

During the last decades, Russia has developed regulations applying to the territories affected by radioactive contamination. Some regulatory approaches appear to be quite ineffective and contradictory. This paper shows by means of examples the problems and issues associated with some existing situations.

[Method of treatment of combined injuries of the liver and spleen in children].

Since 1980 operations for combined injuries of the liver and spleen have been made on 57 children aged from 5 through 16 years. Autografting of splenic tissue into the liver wound was performed in 17 (29.8%) patients using an original technique developed in experiments.

[Enzymatic activity of arterial vessels of the human kidney in the norm and various cardiovascular diseases].

The study was performed in 25 kidneys of people who died from mechanic asphyxia and craniocerebral trauma and in 56 of those who died from cardiovascular diseases (hypertensive disease, chronic ischemic heart disease and their combination) with the use of histochemic, morphometric and variational statistic methods. It was established that in cardiovascular diseases studied ATPase and alkaline phosphatase activity increased in vessels mainly in juxtamedullary zone of the kidneys substantia alba. The enzymatic activity changes studied are obviously connected with the functional load increase at this zone of kidneys and the juxtaglomerular shunt reinforcement.

[Study of a plate apparatus for membrane extraction in detoxication of biological fluids].

The structure of a plate apparatus for detoxication of biological fluids has been described. The operation of the apparatus for cholesterol recovery from blood and artificial biological fluid by the extracting emulsions "water in oil" has been investigated. The parameters of the apparatus, such as the number of plates, the height of the apparatus, the volume of extracting emulsion, have been determined.

The feasibility of using 129I to reconstruct 131I deposition from the Chernobyl reactor accident.

Radioiodine released to the atmosphere from the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in the spring of 1986 resulted in large-scale thyroid-gland exposure of populations in Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. Because of the short half life of 131I (8.04 d), adequate data on the intensities and patterns of iodine deposition were not collected, especially in the regions where the incidence of childhood-thyroid cancer is now increasing.

[The functional and morphological changes in the intestinal sphincter apparatus created by muscle flaps on a fixed vascular-neural pedicle].

Adaptive reaction to new conditions of functioning were studied morphofunctionally in an intestinal sphincteric apparatus formed by mm. gracilis, adductor longus, rectus femoris and semitendinosus in 100 experimental animals. [Morphological changes in the nasal mucosa after diathermo-coagulation in chronic hypertrophic rhinitis].

Morphological changes were investigated in 15 patients suffering from chronic hypertrophic rhinitis after 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, and 120 days of treatment with high frequency current diathermocoagulation of concha nasalis. During treatment an area of coagulation necrosis was formed along the electrode passage which was replaced with sclerotic connective tissue by day 30. The tissue provided a stable reduction of the hypertrophic concha nasalis.

[Effect of naloxone on blood microcirculatory changes in anaphylactic shock].

During the experiment conducted upon 85 guinea-pigs it has been found that the injection of naloxone at the dose of 0.5 g/kg half an hour before the reproduction of anaphylactic shock (AS) by the use of horse serum increases the number of cases of the retarded development of pathological reaction and survival of the animals. Except for the quantitative differences mentioned any peculiarities characterizing the effect of naloxone were not found.
