Unlabelled: The controlled release of mitochondrial content into the cytosol has emerged as one of the key steps in mitochondrial signaling. In particular, the release of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) into the cytosol has been shown to activate interferon beta (IFN-β) gene expression to execute the innate immune response. In this report, we show that human adenovirus type 5 (HAdV-C5) infection induces the release of mtDNA into the cytosol.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFToday, over 300 million individuals worldwide are afflicted by severe fungal infections, many of whom will perish. Fungi, as a result of their plastic genomes have the ability to adapt to new environments and extreme conditions as a consequence of globalization, including urbanization, agricultural intensification, and, notably, climate change. Soils and the impact of these anthropogenic environmental factors can be the source of pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi and subsequent fungal threats to public health.

In the context of the broad use of WSNs in advanced IoT applications, this is the first work to provide an extreme-edge system, to address structural health monitoring (SHM) on polymethyl methacrylate (PPMA) thin-plate. To the best of our knowledge, state-of-the-art solutions primarily utilize impact positioning methods based on the time of arrival of the stress wave, while in the last decade machine learning data analysis has been performed, by more expensive and resource-abundant equipment than general/development purpose IoT devices, both for the collection and the inference stages of the monitoring system.

Recovery of viable bacteria from dissected tissue and fluorescence microscopy show that up to at least 72 h, pneumococci and microspheres were predominantly found in the outer of the two meninges: the pachymeninx. No pneumococci were found in blood or cerebrospinal fluid.

The high modeling detail goes hand in hand with the need for high model reproducibility, reusability and transparency. Besides, the size of the models and the long timescales under study mandate the use of a simulation system with high computational performance, so as to provide an acceptable time to result.

In pancreatic β-cells, both lipid and Ca2+ signaling are essential for insulin secretion. The recently characterized lipid transfer protein TMEM24 (also known as C2CD2L) dynamically localizes to ER-PM contact sites and provides phosphatidylinositol, a precursor of phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate [PI(4)P] and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate [PI(4,5)P2], to the PM.

The drivers of these different disease phenotypes are not known. The GAS cholesterol-dependent cytolysin, Streptolysin O (SLO), has well established cell and tissue destructive activity.

We present SPARC, an approach that combines single-cell RNA-sequencing with proximity extension essays to simultaneously measure global mRNA and 89 intracellular proteins in individual cells. We show that mRNA expression fails to accurately reflect protein abundance at the time of measurement, although the direction of changes is in agreement during neuronal differentiation.

Prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, pneumococcal serotype 1 is atypical in that it is rarely found as a nasopharyngeal coloniser, yet is described as one of the most common causes of invasive pneumococcal disease. Clonal sequence type (ST)-306 and ST615 are representative of the two major serotype 1 lineages A and C, respectively.

Here, we use mouse models of lung infection to identify virulence factors associated with severe bacteraemic pneumonia during serotype-1 (ST217) infection. We use BALB/c mice, which are highly resistant to pneumococcal pneumonia when infected with other serotypes.

We previously experimentally-evolved P. aeruginosa in a murine model of respiratory tract infection and observed early-acquired mutations in pmrB, encoding the sensor kinase of a two-component system that promoted establishment and persistence of infection.

BBB dysfunction is implicated in many neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). The BBB consists of capillary endothelial cells, pericytes encircling the endothelium and surrounding astrocytes extending their processes towards it.

The present study aimed to (i) compare the cost of gluten-free products (GFP) from supermarkets and pharmacies with the cost of their conventional counterparts and (ii) estimate the weekly economic burden of a GFD.
Methods: The prices of all food products labelled as 'gluten-free' available at four supermarket chains in Athens, as well as the prices of all similar conventional food products, were recorded.
Over the past several decades, the incidence of bacterial meningitis in children has decreased but there remains a significant burden of disease in adults, with a mortality of up to 30%. Although the pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis is not completely understood, knowledge of bacterial invasion and entry into the CNS is improving. Clinical features alone cannot determine whether meningitis is present and analysis of cerebrospinal fluid is essential for diagnosis.

The thrombolytic drug alteplase (tissue plasminogen activator or tPA) is the only treatment for acute ischemic stroke but its use is limited by several factors including short therapeutic window, selective efficacy, and subsequent haemorrhagic complications. Numerous preclinical studies have reported very promising results using neuroprotective agents but they have failed at clinical trials because of either safety issues or lack of efficacy.

Somatostatin and opioid systems, are the two main inhibitory systems in mammals. Both classes of substances have been identified in normal and malignant mammary gland, as well as their cognitive receptors. They have been implied in the inhibition of cell growth of cancer cells and cell lines, in a dose-dependent and reversible manner.

Dietary micronutriments have been proposed as effective inhibitory agents for cancer initiation, progression, and incidence. Among them, polyphenols, present in different foods and beverages, have retained attention in recent years.
