A deep learning model of tumor cell architecture elucidates response and resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitors.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 inhibitors (CDK4/6is) have revolutionized breast cancer therapy. However, <50% of patients have an objective response, and nearly all patients develop resistance during therapy. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, we constructed an interpretable deep learning model of the response to palbociclib, a CDK4/6i, based on a reference map of multiprotein assemblies in cancer.

Seroprevalence of Measles in Pairs of Mothers and Newborns in Southern Greece.

Maternal immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies that are passively transferred to newborns through the placenta confer protection if they are exposed to measles virus. A measles outbreak occurred in several European countries including Greece, between 2016 and 2018. A prospective study was conducted in the General Hospital of Lakonia, regarding the measles seropositivity status of mother and newborn pairs.

Translation and cultural adaptation of the Greek integrated palliative care outcome scale (IPOS): challenges in a six-phase process.

Aim: To translate and culturally adapt IPOS to the Greek population.

Methods: A four phases- sequential study, which included verification of conceptual equivalence, double forward- backward translations and conceptual cognitive debriefing. Focus group interviews used 'think aloud' and 'verbal probing' techniques.

Prospective Series of Transarterial Chemoembolization of Metastatic Colorectal Cancer to the Liver with 30-60 μm Microspheres Loaded with Irinotecan.

Purpose: To describe safety and clinical outcomes among patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) to the liver treated with transarterial chemoembolization with HepaSphere™ Microspheres 30-60 μm loaded with irinotecan (ΙRI-HEP-TACE).

Material And Methods: In this prospective study (NCT04866290), 100 adults with confirmed mCRC to the liver who were ineligible for resection were enrolled and followed up to 24 months or death. Study outcomes among Salvage (patients not tolerating more cycles of chemotherapy) and Non-salvage patients included overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), objective response (OR), objective response rate (ORR), best tumor response (BTR), adverse events (AEs), and pharmacokinetics of irinotecan and its active metabolite, 7-ethyl-10-hydroxy-camptothecin (SN38).

Safety, Efficacy and Distribution of Doxorubicin Loaded Radiopaque Beads in Chemoembolization in Intermediate Stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) with Correlation with Local Response.

Purpose: The primary objectives of this study were to evaluate safety, and efficacy of Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) using doxorubicin-loaded radiopaque microspheres (DC Bead LUMI™) for the treatment of early and intermediate stage Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) not amenable for curative treatments. Distribution of the microspheres was correlated with results post embolization.

Materials And Methods: This was a prospective, single arm, open label study.

Attitudes of primary care providers on early palliative care, in new community settings of Attica, Greece; a qualitative analysis.

Background: Early provision of palliative care globally can be achieved by primary health professionals. In Greece, a primary care reformation is currently under development; novel community units have been introduced, with the family physician working for the first time with an interdisciplinary team.

Objectives/setting: To explore the attitudes of such providers, on early palliative care in Attica.

Diagnostic dilemma in spontaneous innominate artery pathology: a case report.

We report the case of a 71-year-old female who presented with sudden onset of right cervical pain and ipsilateral arm hypoaesthesia. The diagnostic evaluation revealed a pathology of the origin of the innominate artery (IA). The differential diagnosis was among a spontaneous acute dissection and a ruptured pseudoaneurysm.

Massive pulmonary embolism due to hydatid cysts: A rare postoperative complication of liver echinococcosis.

Pulmonary embolism due to hydatid cysts is a very rare pathology. A 55-year-old male was transferred to our hospital due to respiratory failure, as a result of left pulmonary artery obstruction by cystic lesions. His medical history included multiple operations for abdominal echinococcosis.

Anterior mediastinal masses are relatively uncommon and include a wide variety of lesions. Lymphomas account for 25% of anterior mediastinal masses. Lymphomas and other haematological malignancies are associated with pericardial effusion.

Factors Affecting Opioid Treatment in Cancer Patients.

Purpose: Pain is prevalent in cancer patients, appearing to be moderate to severe in more than one third of them. Despite the fact that fentanyl is widely used with effective analgesic results, some patients do not correspond to treatment, resulting in opioid change.

Candidate gene investigation of spinal degenerative osteoarthritis in Greek population.

Background Context: Few data exist concerning the natural history of degenerative osteoarthritis (OA) of the spine and its associated gene investigation. Degenerative spinal OA demonstrates an international prevalence of 15% in the general population.

Purpose: The aim of this Greek case-control study is to examine gene polymorphisms that have been previously shown or hypothesized to be correlated to degenerative OA.

Filaggrin and Periostin Expression Is Altered in Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Normalized With Treatment.

Objectives: Previous data have suggested that filaggrin (FLG) and periostin (POSTN) genes may be dysregulated in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). We aimed to further evaluate the expression patterns of FLG and POSTN proteins in esophageal tissue samples of patients with EoE, as compared to those of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and normal controls.

Methods: A total of 61 prospectively collected cases, including 40 children with EoE and 21 children with GERD, and a control group of 14 sex- and age-matched healthy children were enrolled.

Reliability and Validity of the Greek Version of Patient Generated-Subjective Global Assessment in Cancer Patients.

The authors sought to determine the reliability and validity of psychometric properties of the Greek Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) in cancer patients attending a palliative care unit. The scale was translated into Greek. The study took place in an outpatient palliative care unit and 238 cancer patients completed the nutrition assessment.

Background: A combination of PPIs and corticosteroids is the pharmacotherapy mostly used to treat eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), while dietetic manipulations consist also an efficient option. Materials: In this study we evaluated the sera from 800 type 2 diabetic patients recruited during a three year period of time and 200 age matched controls without any clinical history of diabetes.

Locus of control and distressing symptoms in young cancer patients when assessing depression.

Purpose: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the correlation between depression, sense of control (internal and external) and cancer-related distressing symptoms in younger patients (<65 years) with locally advanced or metastatic cancer, and to investigate their potential predictive role when screening for depression.

Inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion due to squamous cell lung cancer.

The syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone is a disorder of impaired water excretion caused by the inability to suppress secretion of antidiuretic hormone. It has been commonly associated with small cell carcinoma. The association of this syndrome with squamous cell lung carcinoma has rarely been reported, with only 4 cases over the past two decades in the English literature.

Intrapulmonary solitary fibrous tumor masquerade sigmoid adenocarcinoma metastasis.

Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare spindle cell mesenchymal tumor entity, with either benign or malignant behavior that cannot be accurately predicted by histological findings. An intrapulmonary site of origin is even rarer. We report a case of a 51-year-old woman in whom an abnormal nodule in the lower right lung was detected during staging for sigmoid adenocarcinoma.
