The value of chemoprophylaxis against Enterococcus species in elective cholecystectomy: a randomized study of cefuroxime vs ampicillin-sulbactam.

Hypothesis: Cephalosporins are widely used and considered to be effective as prophylaxis in biliary surgery. Nevertheless, they lack activity against enterococci. We conducted a study to compare the efficacy of ampicillin-sulbactam vs cefuroxime in preventing surgical site infections following elective cholecystectomy.

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch combined with laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.

Background: The authors investigated the usefulness of an approach combining biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) with duodenal switch (DS) and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) in morbidly obese patients.

Methods: 258 morbidly obese patients underwent bariatric surgery. 80 underwent gastric bypass (GBP), with an 80-ml pouch, a 120-150-cm common channel and a 350-cm alimentary limb (Group 1).
