Objective: This study aimed to investigate the optimal volume of serous fluid needed for accurate diagnosis using The International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytopathology (TIS), as well as to provide information on the distribution of serous effusion cases in the TIS categories (ND: non-diagnostic, NFM: negative for malignancy, AUS: atypia of undetermined significance, SFM: suspicious for malignancy, MAL: malignant) and relevant epidemiological data.
Methods: A retrospective analysis of 2340 serous effusion cases (pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial) from two hospitals between 2018 and 2020 was conducted. TIS categories were assigned to each case, and for 1181 cases, these were correlated with the volume of the analyzed fluid.
The International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytology (TIS) has been proposed by an expert working team composed of the International Academy of Cytology and the American Society of Cytopathology, following an international survey. Since its introduction, the TIS has gained worldwide acceptance, and this review aims to assess its global impact. A literature search revealed 25 studies which have presented data on the impact of the TIS.

Its second edition brought some important changes, including the abolition of the diagnostic category of "low-grade urothelial neoplasm (LGUN)", acknowledging the inability of cytology to reliably discern low-grade urothelial lesions.
Methods: In this retrospective study, we assessed the validity of this change, studying the cytological diagnoses of histologically diagnosed low-grade urothelial carcinomas during a three-year period.

Melanuria is the dark brown discoloration of the urine and an uncommon manifestation in patients with melanoma. It is an ominous sign, usually indicating widespread disease. In this article, through an illustrative case, we discuss the pathophysiological, clinical, and prognostic characteristics of melanuria in melanoma.

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is the appropriate therapeutic strategy for patients with high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGCU) or in situ carcinoma. We investigate how applicable is the Paris System for reporting urinary cytology (TPS) and how accurate is urinary cytology, in patients who undergo intravesical BCG instillations.

The main objectives of this classification comprise the establishment of a universal code of communication between cytopathologists and clinicians and histopathologists, as well as between different laboratories worldwide, paving the way for the setting of clinical management guidelines based on the risk of malignancy assessment for each diagnostic category. We retrieved the total number of pleural and peritoneal effusion cases of our department for the three-year time period between 2018 and 2020, yielding a total of 528 and 500 cases, respectively.

Methods: We retrieved files for 2020, at the Cytopathology Department of Laiko Hospital, of urinary cases diagnosed according to TPS. Cytospin and ThinPrep slides were separately reviewed and new diagnoses were rendered, then compared with the original diagnosis and histology when available.
Background: The Paris System for reporting urinary cytology was introduced in 2013 and has a global impact. In our study, we assess the risk of malignancy (ROM) for each diagnostic category and our diagnostic accuracy in urinary cytology.
Methods: We have conducted a prospective study during 2019, including only new cases of urothelial neoplasms, all of them with subsequent histology.
Background: We investigated serous effusions occurring during the course of an already known hematologic neoplasia or as a first manifestation of it. We correlated cytology results with flow cytometry results, when available. In the absence of flow cytometry, our correlation was based on clinical follow up information obtained retrospectively.

Case: Smear preparations of the ascitic fluid showed a predominance of clusters of malignant cells with vacuolated cytoplasm, mimicking a mucinous adenocarcinoma, and fewer syncytial-like and glandular structures.
Strongyloidiasis is an opportunistic infection which may result in a fatal hyperinfection syndrome in immunocompromised patients. We report the case of a pulmonary infection with Strongyloides stercoralis in a 61-year-old male with a history of a long-term administration of corticosteroids. Cytologic examination of a bronchial washing specimen, processed both as conventional and as Thin-Prep smears, revealed an abundance of the typical larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis, amidst a cellular population comprising several acute inflammatory cells as well as bronchial epithelial cells with features of basal cell hyperplasia or regenerative atypia.

It usually occurs in HIV-positive males with a history of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), and DNA sequences of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) are detected by molecular analysis. The distinct morphologic, immunophenotypic, molecular and clinical characteristics render this neoplasm a new pathologic entity.
