End-Stage Renal Disease Increases Rates of Adverse Glucose Events When Treating Diabetic Ketoacidosis or Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State.

Treatment guidelines for diabetic emergencies are well described in patients with normal to moderately impaired kidney function. However, management of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is an ongoing challenge. This article describes a retrospective study comparing the rates of adverse glucose events (defined as hypoglycemia or a decrease in glucose >200 mg/dL/h) between patients with ESRD and those with normal kidney function who were admitted with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS).

Demodulation algorithm for optical fiber F-P sensor.

The demodulation algorithm is very important to improving the measurement accuracy of a sensing system. In this paper, the variable step size hill climbing search method will be initially used for the optical fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) sensing demodulation algorithm. Compared with the traditional discrete gap transformation demodulation algorithm, the computation is greatly reduced by changing step size of each climb, which could achieve nano-scale resolution, high measurement accuracy, high demodulation rates, and large dynamic demodulation range.

Recombinant immunotoxins (RITs) are proteins that contain a toxin fused to an antibody or small molecules and are constructed by the genetic engineering technique. This review summarizes the development of high-amylose cereal crops through the inactivation of one or more SBE isoforms or combination with other genes.

BODIPY blocked anthroxyl radicals: the substituent effect on reactivity and fluorescence turn-on detection of a hydroxyl radical.

Two BODIPY-substituted anthroxyl radicals were investigated. The one with two ethyl substituents (2Et-BO-An-O) is sensitive to air and silica gel due to the lack of sufficient kinetic blocking, while another one with four methyl substituents (4Me-BO-An-O) shows high stability. The structure of the latter was fully characterized by X-ray crystallographic analysis and electron-spin resonance spectra.

Influence of Different Boundary Conditions in Finite Element Analysis on Pelvic Biomechanical Load Transmission.

Objective: To observe the effects of boundary conditions and connect conditions on biomechanics predictions in finite element (FE) pelvic models.

Methods: Three FE pelvic models were constructed to analyze the effect of boundary conditions and connect conditions in the hip joint: an intact pelvic model assumed contact of the hip joint on both sides (Model I); and a pelvic model assumed the hip joint connecting surfaces fused together with (Model II) or without proximal femurs (Model III). The model was validated by bone surface strains obtained from strain gauges in an in vitro pelvic experiment.

However, the safety of touching manufactured nanoparticles is still uncertain for human beings. Here, we track inorganic nanoparticles in the digestive system of the mouse through upconversion fluorescence and X-ray imaging, and try to demonstrate whether or not the inorganic nanoparticles will penetrate the digestive system to enter the blood system.

Magnetic tuning of upconversion luminescence in Au/NaGdF:Yb/Er nanocomposite.

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) NaGdF:Yb/Er have received increasing attention due to their unique optical-magnetic bifunctional properties. Here, we show that the luminescent intensity from NaGdF:Yb/Er nanoparticles decreases monotonously with increasing the applied magnetic field from 0 to 37.1 T, while plasmon-enhanced upconversion luminescence in Au/NaGdF:Yb/Er nanocomposite is independent of a magnetic field lower than 6 T.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in hospitalized patients and is associated with adverse outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate patient characteristics and interventions during hospitalization associated with the development of AKI in patients continued on renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockers during hospitalization.

Optical fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) sensors have been used in various on-line monitoring of physical parameters such as acoustics, temperature and pressure. In this paper, a wavelet phase extracting demodulation algorithm for optical fiber F-P sensing is first proposed. In application of this demodulation algorithm, search range of scale factor is determined by estimated cavity length which is obtained by fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm.

Preparation of a Specific ssDNA Aptamer for Brevetoxin-2 Using SELEX.

The existing assays for detecting brevetoxin (BTX) depend on expensive equipment with a professional operator or on an antibody with limited stability, which requires complex processes, a high cost, and a considerable amount of time. The development of an alternative detection probe is another promising research direction. Recurrence Rates and Risk Factors for Primary Giant Cell Tumors around the Knee: A Multicentre Retrospective Study in China.

Giant cell tumors of the bone (GCTBs) are commonly diagnosed in Asian populations, usually around the knee. Herein, we aimed to determine the clinical characteristics, local recurrence rates, and relevant risk factors of primary GCTB around the knee. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were used to identify the risk factors for local recurrence.

In this work, the crosslinked quaternized chitosan/bentonite composite was prepared by membrane-forming and cross-linking methods, and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Batch mode was adapted for the adsorption studies. The equilibrium data and kinetic data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, respectively.

Objective: This study aimed to compare the clinical and radiologic outcomes of AO titanium locking plate and screw (ATLPS) and anterograde intramedullary (AIM) fixation for treating unstable metacarpal and phalangeal fractures.

Methods: Adult patients with isolated fresh unstable metacarpal and phalangeal fractures who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled into this prospective study from July 2013. Patients were divided into ATLPS or AIM groups when they were admitted to our department after considering their work requirement, fracture complexity, and surgeon's experience and were then treated accordingly.

Ambient aerosols make a significant contribution to the environment and climate through their optical properties. In this study, the aerosol extinction coefficient and Aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieved using the Fernald Method from the ground-based Micro-Pulse Lidar (MPL) were used to investigate the characteristics of aerosols during haze and haze-free periods in Shanghai. There were 216 haze days including 145 dry haze days, 39 damp haze days and 32days of both dry and damp haze in Shanghai from March 2009 to February 2010.

In this study, the full-length cDNA of the LYPLA1 gene from Ovis aries (OaLypla1) was cloned using primers and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) technology. The full-length OaLypla1 was 2457 bp with a 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of 24 bp, a 3'-UTR of 1740 bp with a poly (A) tail, and an open reading frame (ORF) of 693 bp encoding a protein of 230 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular weight of 24,625.
