Background: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program with the National Cancer Institute tested whether population-based cancer registries can serve as honest brokers to acquire tissue and data in the SEER-Linked Virtual Tissue Repository (VTR) Pilot.

Methods: We collected formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue and clinical data from patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and breast cancer (BC) for two studies comparing cancer cases with highly unusual survival (≥5 years for PDAC and ≤30 months for BC) to pair-matched controls with usual survival (≤2 years for PDAC and ≥5 years for BC). Success was defined as the ability for registries to acquire tissue and data on cancer cases with highly unusual outcomes.

Energy imbalance has an important role in breast cancer prognosis. Hyperactive mechanistic Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is associated with breast tumor growth, but the extent to which body fatness is associated with mTOR pathway activities in breast cancer is unclear. Here, we present a new method for the identification of three fox species of the genus in Chile. We developed an assay based on high-resolution melt analysis of the mitochondrial gene, allowing a simple, low cost, fast, and accurate species determination.

The objective of this study was to determine the ultimate outcome of patients who experienced immediate postoperative instability after primary total hip arthroplasty using regional anesthesia. Thirty-one patients whose radiographs demonstrated dislocation or subluxation immediately after total hip arthroplasty were evaluated as to the ultimate outcome of hip function and stability. Once a dislocation has occurred, the risk of redislocation is high.

Intraoperative, unfractionated heparin, administered intravenously before the femoral work, has demonstrated to be effective in reducing the strong thrombotic stimulus that occurs during total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgery. This randomized, double-blind, prospective study included only THA patients with significant comorbidities predisposing them to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The 2 groups consisted of study patients who received a single dose of intravenous, intraoperative, unfractionated heparin and control patients who received a single dose of intravenous, intraoperative saline.

A prospective study was performed to assess compliance with using a pneumatic foot compression device for venous thrombosis prophylaxis after total knee arthroplasty. One hundred patients received the PlexiPulse pneumatic compression device after unilateral total knee arthroplasty. Patients were observed postoperatively by the nurses on their floor and by 2 impartial research assistants.
