Chemerin, an adipokine implicated in inflammatory, metabolic, and adipogenic processes, has been detected in high serum concentration in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and seems to play a role in PCOS pathogenesis. Moreover, at present, no comprehensive and critical document is available in the literature on this topic. The aim of the current study was to comprehensively review the latest available data to confirm the evidence about the association between chemerin and PCOS, highlighting its potential role as an upcoming biomarker and therapeutic target.

As the demand for smaller and more compact lasers increases, the physical dimensions of laser diodes are already at the diffraction limit, which impairs this miniaturization trend and limits direct laser integration into photonic and especially nanophotonic circuits. However, plasmonics has allowed the development of a novel class of lasers that can be manufactured without being limited by diffraction, exhibiting ultralow energy consumption, small volumes, and high modulation speeds that could someday compete with their modern macroscale counterparts. Biosensing plays a vital role in healthcare monitoring, disease detection, and treatment planning. In recent years, nanofluidic technology has been increasingly explored to be developed into lab-on-a-chip biosensing systems. Given now the possibility of fabricating geometrically defined nanometric channels that are commensurate with the size of many biomolecules, nanofluidic-based devices are likely to become a key technology for the analysis of various clinical biomarkers, including DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and proteins in liquid biopsies.

We consider a design procedure for directional couplers for which the coupling length is approximately wavelength-independent over a wide bandwidth. We show analytically that two coupled planar waveguides exhibit a maximum in the coupling strength, which ensures both wideband transmission and minimal device footprint. This acts as a starting point for mapping out the relevant part of phase space.

Propose: This pilot study aimed to apply the central tenets of bloodless surgery and to analyze the effectiveness of specific preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative strategies to minimize the risk for blood transfusion after gynecological surgery in a specific group of patients who refused blood products.

Methods: A total of 83 patients undergoing gynecological surgery were included in the study. Forty-two patients received preoperatively oral iron, acid folic, and vitamin B supplementation in the 30 days before surgery, and 41 patients did not receive therapy.

In Italy the fertility rate is very low, and an increasing number of patients are infertile and require treatments. The Italian Law concerning the safety of patient care, and the professional liability of health professionals, indicates that health professionals must comply with the recommendations set out in the guidelines developed by public and private bodies and institutions, as well as scientific societies and technical-scientific associations of the health professions, except for specific cases. Unfortunately, no guideline for the diagnosis and the management of infertility is currently available in Italy.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is the main severe complication of ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. The aim of the current study was to identify the interventions for the prevention of and reduction in the incidence and severity of OHSS in patients who undergo IVF not included in systematic reviews with meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and assess and grade their efficacy and evidence base. The best available evidence for each specific intervention was identified, analyzed in terms of safety/efficacy ratio and risk of bias, and graded using the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) hierarchy of evidence.

Background: Published data on the relationship between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and thyroid dysfunction are sparse and confusing.

Objective: To comprehensively review data available in the literature regarding the relationship between PCOS and the thyroid function, and its abnormalities.

Methods: Nine main areas of interest were identified and analyzed according to the available evidence: 1) Evaluation of thyroid function for PCOS diagnosis; 2) Epidemiology data on thyroid function/disorders in patients with PCOS, and vice versa; 3) Experimental data supporting the relationship between thyroid function/disorders and PCOS; 4) Effects of thyroid function/disorders on PCOS features, and vice versa; 5) Effect of thyroid alterations on the cardiometabolic risk in women with PCOS; 6) Effect of thyroid abnormalities on reproductive outcomes in women with PCOS; 7) Relationship between thyroid function/abnormalities in patients with PCOS who are undergoing fertility treatment; 8) Effect of treatments for thyroid diseases on PCOS; and 9) Effect of treatments for PCOS on thyroid function.

Background: Endometrial scratching (ES) or injury is intentional damage to the endometrium performed to improve reproductive outcomes for infertile women desiring pregnancy. Moreover, recent systematic reviews with meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials demonstrated that ES is not effective, data on the safety are limited, and it should not be recommended in clinical practice. The aim of the current study was to assess the view and behavior towards ES among fertility specialists throughout infertility centers in Italy, and the relationship between these views and the attitudes towards the use of ES as an add-on in their commercial setting.

We report for the first time the direct growth of molybdenum disulfide (MoS) monolayers on nanostructured silicon-on-insulator waveguides. Our results indicate the possibility of utilizing the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) on nanostructured photonic devices in a scalable process. Direct growth of 2D material on nanostructures rectifies many drawbacks of the transfer-based approaches.
