Forensic anthropologists engage with numerous and diverse stakeholders in their casework. Regarding the recovery of human remains, these stakeholders may be interested in quantifying or qualifying the amount of remains recovered. How forensic anthropologists respond to such questions, whether verbally or in written reporting, has the potential to impact the trajectory of a case.

Article Synopsis
  • This study reviews recent advancements in various analytical techniques since 2014 that enhance the ability to separate individual skeletal remains from mixed collections.
  • It highlights the importance of combining traditional methods with new technologies to improve identification of remains and analyze a broader range of skeletal elements.
  • The summary guides practitioners in selecting the best analytical approaches based on their goals, budget, and project requirements, supported by case studies in forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology.

Blast trauma results from highly variable events that can lead to similar effects in the skeleton. Clinical literature, which largely focuses on soft tissue, provides limited efficacy for interpreting fully skeletonized cases. Interpretation of skeletal blast trauma is hampered by the low number of fully skeletonized case studies and experimental replication studies, which mainly use nonhuman proxies.

Background: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with acetylsalicylic acid and oral P2Y12 inhibitor (P2Y12-I) represents the standard of care for patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) or with chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Cangrelor, the first intravenous P2Y12-I, is deemed to overcome the drawbacks of the oral administration; nevertheless, real world data on this new drug are scanty. We sought to investigate routine clinical use of cangrelor in four interventional centers of Italy.

This study examines patterns of skeletal trauma in propeller-driven aircraft crashes and blast-related ground loss incidents from WWII. Specifically, descriptions and criteria used to characterize aircraft deceleration- versus blast-related skeletal injuries are examined from 35 recently identified forensic anthropology cases to determine possible diagnostic traits and characterize skeletal trauma associated with these events. Among these cases, blast trauma is more localized within the skeleton and is associated with one or few primary directions of force.

Objectives: Recovery rates reflect the amount of recovered skeletal materials based on expectations about the total number of elements or individuals that should be present in an assemblage. It is an underlying concept that reflects analytical potential, wherein high recovery rates typically indicate high analytical capabilities. However, numerous methods are available to calculate different types of recovery rates, and each method addresses various types of research questions and utilizes different variables.

Forensic casework from past-conflicts relies on the corrected historical Trotter data for stature estimation in Fordisc. For roughly 10 years', stature estimation using this data has produced point estimates for the tibia that are on average 1.25 inches less than the other long bones.

Mucinous adenocarcinoma (MAC) is a malignancy rarely affecting the salivary glands, with fewer than 30 cases described in the medical literature. MAC is mostly observed in the minor salivary glands of the palate, and to date, no case of salivary MAC has been reported in the mandible. Identifying a salivary MAC may be both clinically and histopathologically challenging, as differential diagnosis must consider not only other salivary malignancies expressing a mucinous component but also metastases from MACs of the gastrointestinal tract, breast, and sweat glands that strongly resemble a salivary MAC on histopathology.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a left ventricle cardiomyopathy characterized by a reversible dyskinesia responsible for the typical apical ballooning aspect. The disease is considered benignant with a full recovery within a few weeks. We present the case of a 52-year-old woman who presented with angina diagnosed with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy on the basis of both noninvasive (electrocardiography, echocardiography) and invasive (angiography) exams.
