Enzymatic synthesis of Hydroxytyrosol from Oleuropein for valorization of an agricultural waste.

Oleuropein (OP) is an appreciated compound present not only in fruits but also in leaves of olive trees, which can be transformed into hydroxytyrosol (HT), a substance with high antioxidant activity. In this work, the transformation of an agricultural residue containing OP (olive leaves or wastewater from mills) to the high added value compound HT is accomplished through different enzymatic strategies. Different enzymes were used, immobilized on various supports by diverse binding forces: beta-glucosidase encapsulated in siliceous material, esterases and lipases immobilized on hydrophobic supports (octyl-functionalized amorphous silica and periodic mesoporous organosilica), and esterase immobilized on amine-functionalized ordered mesoporous silica.

Optimization of sub-relativistic co-propagating accelerating structures.

In this paper, novel optimization methodologies of sub-relativistic guided interaction structures for dielectric laser particle acceleration (DLA) are presented. In particular, we focus on co-propagating geometries based on slot waveguides in continuous wave (CW) operation, where the particle flow and the direction of propagation of the accelerating field are co-linear. Since the velocity of sub-relativistic particles varies along the acceleration path, proper tapering of the waveguide geometry is required to achieve an extended acceleration region, and, thus a large energy gain.

Psychological symptoms in Multiple Sclerosis and the role of marital status: results from a retrospective single-center study.

Background: Married people have, on average, better mental health than no married people. Psychological symptoms as anxiety and depression occur frequently in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), increasing the severity of neurologic disability. Artichoke Industrial Waste in Durum Wheat Bread: Effects of Two Different Preparation and Drying Methods of Flours and Evaluation of Quality Parameters during Short Storage.

In this study, the effects of two different preparation and drying methods (method A, fresh sample oven-dried at 40 °C for 48 h then mixed and ground into flour; and B, minced and frozen sample oven-dried at 40 °C for 24 h then blended and ground into flour) for flours from different parts of the artichoke (bracts, stems, and mix), used at different percentages of integration (5, 7.5, and 10%), in combination with re-milled semolina, have been evaluated.

Apathy and impulsiveness in Parkinson disease: Two faces of the same coin?

Apathy and impulsiveness are 2 common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson disease that could occur in different periods or simultaneously. Apathy and impulsiveness could be interpreted as opposite extremes of a spectrum of motivated behavior dependent on dopaminergic dysfunction, in which, impulsivity, is a result of a hyperdopaminergic state, whereas apathy is viewed as a hypodopaminergic. The study aimed to investigate the presence of impulsiveness and other neuropsychiatric symptoms in Parkinson disease patients with apathy symptoms.

Neuropsychological implication in possible antibody-negative limbic encephalitis: a clinical case report.

Autoimmune limbic encephalitis is an antibody-mediated brain inflammatory process, which typically involves the medial temporal lobe. Diagnosis requires the presence of antineuronal antibodies, but sometimes patients present clinical features of limbic encephalitis despite negative serology. Thus, the diagnosis of antibody-negative limbic encephalitis is difficult to make, and it must often rely largely on exclusion of other causes.

Killer yeasts isolated from olive brines: Technological and probiotic aptitudes.

Table olive brines, inoculated with six different starters of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) or spontaneously fermented, have been used as isolating source of killer yeasts throughout the fermentation process (120 d). Killer yeast isolates were identified and evaluated for technological and probiotic traits. Although the count of yeast population did not markedly vary among the different vessels and over time, the killer yeast phenotype was mainly present in yeast strains isolated from spontaneous fermentation; the number of killer isolates decreased over fermentation time.

Pomegranate Byproduct Extracts as Ingredients for Producing Experimental Cheese with Enhanced Microbiological, Functional, and Physical Characteristics.

Pomegranate peel and mesocarp, considered as wastes of fruit processing, are rich sources of beneficial phytochemicals, including hydrolyzable tannins and flavonoids, with proven antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, which can be employed for improving the overall quality of food products. In the present study, extracts from pomegranate peel (PPW) and mesocarp (PMW) were obtained through a water extraction method and evaluated for in vitro antimicrobial activity and polyphenol content. The two extracts were then added during the cheese-making process in order to create a new functional cheese with improved microbiological and physico-chemical characteristics.

Background: higher level of aggression and antisocial behavior are frequent following head trauma, due to specific brain alterations. Many tests are used to assess this aspect. A descriptive review was conducted on the main tests used to detect the appearance of aggressive dimensions following traumatic brain injury.

Role of functional pharmacological therapy in post-stroke depression: a narrative review.

Objective: We conducted a narrative review to investigate whether antidepressant therapy, including the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) or the use of supportive drugs (i.e., citicoline or choline alfoscerate) as a substitute for antidepressant therapy, reduces depression in patients with cerebrovascular diseases.

Assessment of insight in hospitalized neurological patient: Cognitive profile and mood disorder.

Purpose: Many studies have evaluated the characteristics of insight, especially in psychiatric patient populations. However, this construct has been poorly examined within neurological disorders. We explored the relationship between altered insight, mood disorders and neurocognitive functioning in a sample of patients admitted to a neurological rehabilitation unit.

We investigated anxiety, depression, and quality of life in PD patients subjected to multidisciplinary rehabilitative training.

Characterization of Prickly Pear Peel Flour as a Bioactive and Functional Ingredient in Bread Preparation.

The aim of the present research was to evaluate the addition of prickly pear peel flour (PPPF) to bread dough as a source of nutrient and bioactive compounds. The PPPF's physical, chemical and nutritional composition was evaluated, as well as its content of bioactive compounds betalains, and flavonoids. The characterization evidenced high fiber and carbohydrate contents and an elevated amount of polyphenols and betalain compounds.

Purpose: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a clinical sleep disorder defined by total or partial airflow restraint during sleep that results in fragmented sleep and hypoxemia, impacting negatively with cognitive functioning. This review was conducted on studies investigating structural brain alteration and cognitive impairment in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Employ of Citrus By-product as Fat Replacer Ingredient for Bakery Confectionery Products.

Citrus fruits processing is one of the foremost industrial activities in Sicily and the main residual by-product consists in peels and seeds (known as "pastazzo"). Traditionally this by-product has been used for different purposes, and only most recently, it has been described as source of a wide range of healthy bioactive compounds and dietary fibers. In the present work, a debittered food grade orange fiber (DOF), extracted from orange juice by-product, was experimentally obtained and tested as fat-replacer at different percentages (30, 50, and 70%) in bakery confectionery products (brioches).
