Bacterial Communities From Two Freshwater Aquaculture Systems in Northern Germany.

The microbial communities in aquaculture systems are primarily affected by changes in water quality, fish metabolism, feeding strategies and fish disease prevention treatments. Monitoring changes in aquatic microbiomes related to aquaculture activities is necessary to improve management strategies and reduce the environmental impact of aquaculture water discharge. This study assessed the effects of activities within two fish farms on water microbiome composition by analysing the water entering and leaving both systems.

Operating room team's perception of procedure shift to cemented hemiarthroplasty.

Introduction: A procedural change in the treatment of patients with femoral neck fracture from uncemented to cemented hemiarthroplasty was to be implemented to follow new national guidelines. In accordance with implementation science, it is important to understand the team's thoughts and educational needs. The study aimed to explore surgeons', scrub nurses', anaesthesiologists' and anaesthesia nurses' perceptions of barriers and facilitators to foster a safe educational introduction.

Readmission and mortality before and after introduction of orthogeriatric home visits: A retrospective cohort study in hip fracture patients.

Introduction: Orthogeriatric collaboration in hip fracture patients during admission is well established, however, orthogeriatric involvement after discharge is not common. The aim of this study was to explore the association of orthogeriatric home visits with 30-day and 120-day readmission and mortality in ≥ 65-year-old patients surgically treated for hip fractures.

Materials And Methods: A cohort of patients who underwent acute hip fracture surgery in an usual care period from January 2018 to December 2018 was compared with a cohort of patients in an intervention period from June 2020 to June 2021.

A multi-stage lithium-ion battery aging dataset using various experimental design methodologies.

This dataset encompasses a comprehensive investigation of combined calendar and cycle aging in commercially available lithium-ion battery cells (Samsung INR21700-50E). A total of 279 cells were subjected to 71 distinct aging conditions across two stages. Stage 1 is based on a non-model-based design of experiments (DoE), including full-factorial and Latin hypercube experimental designs, to determine the degradation behavior.

A major challenge in agriculture, horticulture and aquaponics practices is the reduction of mineral fertilisers and peat to reduce CO emissions and increase sustainability. This study used a three-phase-natural fertiliser, the Humicacid Fiber-Substrate (HFS), made from natural regenerative organic and mineral-fractions (Humus-Mineral-Complex), to reduce the peat content in plant pots for aquaponics farming. Basil (Ocimum basilicum) growth was compared with i) 100% standard media substrate ("Einheitserde", white peat 80%, clay 20%), and ii) 85% "Einheitserde" and 15% of HFS under irrigation with aquaculture process waters from an extensive and intensive production of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) under coupled aquaponic conditions.

Electromyography and range-of-motion measurements in German soldiers wearing different types of body armour while marching.

Introduction: In this study, we used surface electromyography (EMG) electrodes in order to measure and compare activity in the neck, back and thigh muscles of soldiers wearing two different types of body armour. A secondary objective was to analyse shoulder and hip ranges of motion using inertial motion sensors.

Methods: Fourteen male soldiers were instructed to march 6 km on a treadmill while wearing different types of body armour.

Setting proficiency standards for simulation-based mastery learning of short antegrade femoral nail osteosynthesis: a multicenter study.

Background And Purpose: Orthopedic trainees frequently perform short antegrade femoral nail osteosynthesis of trochanteric fractures, but virtual reality simulation-based training (SBT) with haptic feedback has been unavailable. We explored a novel simulator, with the aim of gathering validity evidence for an embedded test and setting a credible pass/fail standard allowing trainees to practice to proficiency.

This review summarises the present knowledge of acute foot attacks in patients with diabetes. Diagnosis and treatment of acute foot attacks in patients with diabetes are often delayed, which increases the risk of amputations. To prevent this, urgent action is necessary, as it is for acute myocardial infarction and stroke, to ensure that patients are seen by competent specialists in a multidisciplinary team within hours.

Improved gait parameters following surgical revascularization in patients with intermittent claudication.

Objective: Intermittent claudication (IC) is known to be associated with impaired gait parameters, with a higher incidence of falls and higher oxygen consumption due to uneconomic walking. However, the influence of arterial disobliteration in patients with IC on their gait pattern has rarely been investigated to date. The aim of this study was to examine the gait patterns before and after inflow revascularization by surgical disobliteration of pelvic and inguinal arteries (ie, common iliac artery, external iliac artery, common femoral artery, profound femoral artery, superficial femoral artery) in IC patients.

Incidence of dislocation and associated risk factors in patients with a femoral neck fracture operated with an uncemented hemiarthroplasty.

Background: Increasing evidence points at an important physiological role of the timekeeping system, known as the circadian clock (CC), regulating not only our sleep-awake rhythm but additionally many other cellular processes in peripheral tissues. It was shown in various cell types that environmental stressors, including ultraviolet B radiation (UV-B), modulate the expression of genes that regulate the CC (CCGs) and that these CCGs modulate susceptibility for UV-B-induced cellular damage. It was the aim of this pilot study to gain further insights into the CCs' putative role for UV-B-induced photocarcinogenesis of skin cancer.

Incidence, Quality of Care, and Mortality in Hip Fracture Patients in the Course of the COVID Pandemic: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

Background: We assessed the incidence, quality of in-hospital care, and mortality for hip fracture (HF) patients in Denmark before and during the coronavirus disease (COVID) pandemic.

Methods: We obtained data from the Danish registries in the COVID period (March 11, 2020 to January 27, 2021, overall and in 5 periods) and compared it to a pre-COVID period (March 13, 2019 to March 10, 2020). We calculated the proportion of patients (%) that have fulfilled all the relevant quality indicators (a composite score of 100%) and adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) for 30-day mortality.

Intensified acute in-hospital physiotherapy for patients after hip fracture surgery: a pragmatic, randomized, controlled feasibility trial.

In Denmark, the incidence rate of lower extremity amputations (LEA) in patients with diabetes has decreased remarkably from 1980 to 2017, in contrast to USA, where it has increased in the last decade. In this review the development in Denmark is summarised. In fact, in 2017, the incidence rate of LEA in patient with diabetes was "only" two-4 four-fold larger than in persons without diabetes.

No effect of hydroxyapatite-coated sliding hip screw threads on screw migration in the femoral head/neck of pertrochanteric fractures: a randomized controlled trial using radiostereometric analysis.

Introduction: Cut-out is the most frequently reported mechanical failure of internal fixation of pertrochanteric fractures. The purpose of this study was to examine if hydroxyapatite-coated screw thread on a sliding hip screw (SHS) could reduce screw migration within the femoral head in patients with stable pertrochanteric fractures.

Materials And Methods: In a double-blinded randomized controlled study, 37 patients at mean age 78 (range 56-96), with pertrochanteric fracture (Evans I, II, IV) received surgery with a SHS with a hydroxyapatite-coated or a non-coated lag screw thread.

A piriformis-preserving posterior approach reduces dislocation rate of the hemiarthroplasty in patients with femoral neck fracture.

Introduction: The posterior approach (PA) for hemiarthroplasty (HA) in patients with femoral neck fracture (FFN) has a high risk of dislocation; however, by preserving the piriformis muscle, the dislocation rate could be lowered considerably. The aim of this study was to compare the surgical complications of the piriformis-preserving posterior approach (PPPA) and the PA in patients with FNF treated with HA.
