Long-term sample stability of five atypical antipsychoticdrugs risperidone, paliperidone, clozapine, quetiapine and olanzapine and the antidepressant drug mirtazapine in serum was studied by use of a newly developed and validated analytical method based on solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Ascorbic acid was used as an antioxidative agent to stabilize olanzapine during storage and sample preparation. We assessed analyte stability on long-term storage in serum samples at 25°C, 5°C, -20°C and -80°C, and during five freeze-thaw cycles.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study was conducted to assess substance use (including alcohol and nicotine) in pregnant women in Denmark, as there is limited verified data on this topic.
  • - The research involved urine samples and questionnaires from nearly 1900 pregnant women attending ultrasound scans; results showed that 25% tested positive for substances, with a confirmed prevalence of 10.8% for all substances, predominantly nicotine usage.
  • - The findings indicated that while self-reporting of nicotine was high, reporting for alcohol and cannabis was notably low, highlighting discrepancies between self-reported data and actual substance use detected through screening.

The metabolite of ethanol, ethyl glucuronide (EtG), reflects alcohol intake longer than ethanol and is used as a biomarker in clinical settings to detect alcohol use. We aimed to assess the clinical usefulness in a low-to-moderate alcohol intake setting and validate a new urine EtG dipstick. A three-way, open, cross-over trial was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypovitaminosis D, defined as low levels of vitamin D in pregnant women and newborns, affects many globally and is linked to lower birth weight and placental development.
  • In a study involving 2,082 women from the Odense Child Cohort, it was found that 16.7% of newborns had vitamin D deficiency and 41% had insufficiency, with factors like low maternal vitamin D supplementation and high BMI increasing risk.
  • Higher levels of cord vitamin D were positively associated with birth weight and placental metrics, suggesting that addressing vitamin D levels could improve neonatal outcomes.

Aim: Patients receiving lamotrigine therapy frequently use paracetamol concomitantly. While one study suggests a possible, clinically relevant drug-drug interaction, practical recommendations of the concomitant use are inconsistent. We performed a systematic pharmacokinetic study in healthy volunteers to quantify the effect of 4 day treatment with paracetamol on the metabolism of steady-state lamotrigine.

Background: Recent studies have found vitamin D (25-OHD) deficiency and insufficiency to be common among patients with COPD. Serum level of 25-OHD seems to correlate to pulmonary function, COPD disease staging, and increased susceptibility to respiratory infections. We wanted to investigate whether vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency was associated with mortality rate in patients suffering from advanced COPD.
