NICU Caregiver Communication Preferences and Disparities by Primary Language: A Qualitative Study.

Objectives: Effective communication between clinical providers and infant caregivers is vital to family-centered care and engagement in the NICU. Infants in the level IV NICU often have complex medical needs and prolonged lengths of stay, leading to challenges maintaining effective and consistent communication, particularly for families with a primary language other than English. The objective of this qualitative study is to determine the facilitators and barriers to effective communication among English- and Spanish-speaking caregivers in a level IV NICU.

Antibiotic Efficacy against Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Biofilms on Synthetic and Biological Vascular Grafts.

Background: Biofilm formation is one of the greatest challenges encountered in vascular graft infections. Our aim is to compare the efficacy of 5 antibiotics against methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) biofilms on the surface of 4 vascular grafts.

Methods: In vitro study of 2 clinical MSSA strains (MSSA2 and MSSA6) and 4 vascular grafts (Dacron, Dacron-silver-triclosan (DST), Omniflow-II, and bovine pericardium).

Background: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS), of whom there are about 500,000 living in Europe, are at an increased risk of developing health problems [1-6] and require lifelong Survivorship Care. There are information and knowledge gaps among CCS and healthcare providers (HCPs) about requirements for Survivorship Care [7-9] that can be addressed by the Survivorship Passport (SurPass), a digital tool providing CCS and HCPs with a comprehensive summary of past treatment and tailored recommendations for Survivorship Care. The potential of the SurPass to improve person-centred Survivorship Care has been demonstrated previously [10,11].

Sleep disorders are common in children and affect neurological development with important cognitive, emotional and behavioral repercussions. There is a high prevalence of sleep disorders (SD) in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Sleep disorders in pediatric population have a prevalence of 6-25%, while in children with NDD this number rises to 50-80%.

Social Determinants of Health and Parenting Self-Efficacy Among Mothers of Preterm Infants.

Objective: To explore the relationships between social and environmental factors and parenting self-efficacy (PSE) among mothers of preterm infants hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) using a social determinants of health (SDoH) framework.

Method: We analyzed data from a prospective cohort study that included 187 mother-infant dyads admitted to four NICUs in the Mountain West region between June 2017 and December 2019. We used multivariable linear regression models to assess the independent associations between maternal and infant characteristics and PSE.

Submandibular Ectopic Parathyroid Adenoma: A Case Report.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by hypercalcemia and elevated or abnormally normal parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, due to excessive secretion of PTH by 1 or more parathyroid glands. In this report, we discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges posed by ectopic parathyroid adenomas, a rare but atypical presentation of PHPT. We present the case of a 36-year-old female with PHPT due to an ectopic parathyroid adenoma located in the submandibular region.

Antibacterial Activity of Silver Nanoparticles Conjugated with Amikacin and Combined with Hyperthermia against Drug-Resistant and Biofilm-Producing Strains.

First, we synthesized highly monodispersed silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of approximately 17 nm, and we functionalized them with mercaptopoly(ethylene glycol) carboxylic acid (mPEG-COOH) and amikacin (AK).

NICU Visitation Time and Adherence to Safe Sleep Practices Among Mothers of Very Preterm Infants.

Background: Sleep-associated infant death is the leading cause of postneonatal mortality in the United States. Preterm infants are at higher risk for sleep-associated death, but maternal adherence to safe sleep practices is lower than for mothers of full-term infants. Data are lacking on whether maternal neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) visitation time impacts safe sleep compliance after hospital discharge.

[Neurophysiological studies in neurodevelopmental disorders: event related potentials].

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders whose diagnosis is clinical and with great variability in clinical presentation. The possibility of identifying and validating biomarkers in these neurodevelopmental disorders would help not only in their diagnosis, but also when implementing personalized treatments and monitori ng the response to treatment. Neurophysiological examinations such as event related potentials (ERP) are one of the most widely used tools to objectively assess cognitive functions with high temporal resolution and provide information on the underlying neurobiological mechanisms, making them a very useful tool to assess cognitive alterations associated with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm Formation on Vascular Grafts: an Study.

The aim of this study was to quantify biofilm formation by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) on the surfaces of different types of commonly used vascular grafts. We performed an study with two clinical strains of MSSA (MSSA2 and MSSA6) and nine vascular grafts: Dacron (Hemagard), Dacron-heparin (Intergard heparin), Dacron-silver (Intergard Silver), Dacron-silver-triclosan (Intergard Synergy), Dacron-gelatin (Gelsoft Plus), Dacron plus polytetrafluoroethylene (Fusion), polytetrafluoroethylene (Propaten; Gore), Omniflow II, and bovine pericardium (XenoSure). Biofilm formation was induced in two phases: an initial 90-minute adherence phase and a 24-hour growth phase.

Background: Mothers' engagement with their hospitalized preterm infant(s) is recognized as an important aspect of treatment in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). However, no gold standard exists for measuring maternal engagement, and the various methods used to measure mothers' time have documented limitations.

Objectives: This study sought to compare three measurement methods of maternal engagement (a five-item maternal cross-sectional survey, time use diaries, and electronic health records [EHRs]) to identify whether these methods capture consistent data and patterns in detected differences in measures of engagement.

Ethnic Disparities in the Care of Opioid-Exposed Newborns in Colorado Birthing Hospitals.

Objectives: Investigate disparities by Hispanic ethnicity in the care of opioid exposed newborns (OENs) in Colorado birthing hospitals within a statewide quality improvement collaborative.

Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of a quality improvement initiative aimed at standardizing hospital-based care of OENs through implementation of the Eat, Sleep, Console Model. We used statistical process control charts to compare time to special cause variation by Hispanic ethnicity for outcomes including infant length of stay, use of pharmacologic therapy, and breastfeeding eligibility and receipt.

The Association of Social Factors and Time Spent in the NICU for Mothers of Very Preterm Infants.

Objectives: Evaluate the association between maternal social factors and maternal time spent in the NICU for very preterm infants admitted to 4 level III and IV NICUs.

Methods: In this prospective observational cohort study, we enrolled mother-infant dyads whose infants were born <32 weeks' gestation. Enrollment occurred after 2 weeks of NICU exposure, when maternal social factors and demographic information was collected.
