Carbon dioxide (CO) emission to the atmosphere is the prime cause of certain environmental issues like global warming and climate change, in the present day scenario. Capturing CO from various stationary industrial emission sources is one of the initial steps to control the aforementioned problems. For this concern, a variety of resources, such as liquid absorbents, solid adsorbents, and membranes, have been utilized for CO capturing from various emission sources.

Carbon capture and storage is a necessary action for the reduction of CO emissions, and thereby mitigation of climate change and its impacts. Especially, in India, with its growing fuel needs and very little attention paid towards carbon capture and storage, mineral carbonation technology is a suitable option as it is cost-effective and could be retrofitted to existing plants that emit CO. Given the development of carbon capture and storage technology, this study attempts direct mineral carbonation of steelmaking slag with flue gas.

Flooding is one of the most disastrous global hazards, which has been occurring more frequently in recent times. It is observed that climate change is likely to increase the intensity and the frequency of floods and river basins have become more vulnerable to fluvial flooding. In this study, the impact of climate change on fluvial flooding was analyzed over the Adyar sub-basin.

Research outcomes from the epidemiological studies have found that the course (PM10) and the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are mainly responsible for various respiratory health effects for humans. The population-weighted exposure assessment is used as a vital decision-making tool to analyze the vulnerable areas where the population is exposed to critical concentrations of pollutants.

Laboratory studies were conducted to find out the efficacy of uniquely prepared zero valent iron impregnated silica in transforming xenobiotic chlorophenols namely 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. Continuous mode column experiments were performed to investigate the transformation of chlorophenols by varying pH, column height, flow rate and initial chlorophenol concentration. Reusability study of the zero valent iron impregnated silica was studied as well as the morphological changes and the chemical composition of the catalyst medium were also investigated.

A laboratory study was carried out by electrochemical oxidation to destroy cyanide in aqueous waste. The electrode used in this study was a triple oxide coated titanium based mesh type anode and a carbon cathode. Direct and indirect methods were both carried out at alkaline conditions and indirect oxidation method in the presence of chloride was found to be more efficient.
