In this work the development of photoactive dressings (PAD) with dual purpose, is presented. These PAD can be used for the topical treatment of persistent infections caused by fungi and bacteria and are also applicable in light antitumor therapy for carcinoma. The synthesized PAD were designed employing conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPN) doped with platinum porphyrin which serve as polymerization photoinitiators and photosensitizers for the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

The challenge lies in the vulnerability of infants who have not yet completed their vaccination schedule and in adolescents and adults becoming potential disease carriers.
Methods: We evaluated the seroprevalence of pertussis immunity in a cohort of 1,500 healthy Brazilian volunteers.
Background: In patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic infection and advanced liver disease, the impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection on the clinical outcome after sustained virological response (SVR) has not been sufficiently clarified. The aim of this study was to compare the mortality after SVR of patients bearing HCV chronic infection and advanced liver fibrosis, with and without HIV-coinfection after a prolonged follow-up.
Methods: This was a prospective multicenter cohort study including individuals with HIV/HCV-coinfection and patients with HCV-monoinfection from Spain, fulfilling: 1) Liver stiffness (LS) ≥9.
A 53-year-old male with a history of multiple deep venous thromboses (DVTs) underwent a right open radical nephrectomy with inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombectomy in the context of renal cell carcinoma (RCC)-associated venous thrombosis. Imaging and renal biopsy revealed a diagnosis of RCC with non-occlusive thrombosis of the left renal vein and occlusive thrombosis of the infrarenal IVC. The major risks of concern for the procedure included thrombus embolization from surgical manipulation and massive bleeding.

Limitations of conventional treatments have prompted the exploration of alternative approaches, such as photodynamic inactivation (PDI). In this study, we developed a PDI protocol to eliminate BM-associated pathogens using porphyrin-doped conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPN).

Background: Functional impairment is one of the most decisive prognostic factors in patients with complex chronic diseases. A more significant functional impairment indicates that the disease is progressing, which requires implementing diagnostic and therapeutic actions that stop the exacerbation of the disease.
Objective: This study aimed to predict alterations in the clinical condition of patients with complex chronic diseases by predicting the Barthel Index (BI), to assess their clinical and functional status using an artificial intelligence model and data collected through an internet of things mobility device.
BACKGROUNDPersistent controllers (PCs) maintain antiretroviral-free HIV-1 control indefinitely over time, while transient controllers (TCs) eventually lose virological control. It is essential to characterize the quality of the HIV reservoir in terms of these phenotypes in order to identify the factors that lead to HIV progression and to open new avenues toward an HIV cure.METHODSThe characterization of HIV-1 reservoir from peripheral blood mononuclear cells was performed using next-generation sequencing techniques, such as full-length individual and matched integration site proviral sequencing (FLIP-Seq; MIP-Seq).

Tropical forests are strongly affected by ENSO, and in the case of the Amazon, its territorial extension allows for a wide variation of these effects. The prolongation of drought events in the Amazon basin contributes to an increase in gas and aerosol particle emissions mainly caused by biomass burning, which in turn alter radiative fluxes and evapotranspiration rates, cyclically interfering with the hydrological regime.

Methods: In an ongoing phase 3, double-blind trial in Brazil, we randomly assigned participants to receive Butantan-DV or placebo, with stratification according to age (2 to 6 years, 7 to 17 years, and 18 to 59 years); 5 years of follow-up is planned. The objectives of the trial were to evaluate overall vaccine efficacy against symptomatic, virologically confirmed dengue of any serotype occurring more than 28 days after vaccination (the primary efficacy end point), regardless of serostatus at baseline, and to describe safety up to day 21 (the primary safety end point).
Gas turbines are thermoelectric plants with various applications, such as large-scale electricity production, petrochemical industry, and steam generation. In order to optimize the operation of a gas turbine, it is necessary to develop system identification models that allow for the development of studies and analyses to increase the system's reliability. Current strategies for modeling complex and non-linear systems can be based on artificial intelligence techniques, using autoregressive neural networks of the NARX and LSTM type.

Sonodynamic inactivation (SDI) of pathogens has an important advantage when compared to optical excitation-based protocols due to the deeper penetration of ultrasound (US) excitation in biological media or animal tissue. Sonosensitizers (SS) are compounds or systems that upon US stimulation in the therapeutic window (frequency = 0.8-3 MHz and intensity < 3 W/cm) can induce damage to vital components of pathogenic microorganisms.

The NCAs and EMA are involved at different stages of the medicine life cycle; not all are engaged in a particular medicine's development discussions. As a result, knowledge management (ie, acquisition and transfer between medicine developer and the NCAs) is fragmented and inefficient.

Because of the low performance of the existing prediction tools, there is controversy surrounding fracture risk estimation in this population. The aim of the study was to develop a model for predicting the long-term risk of fragility fractures in people with HIV.

An important disadvantage of PDT using a high light irradiance (fluence rate) (cPDT) is the abrupt oxygen consumption that leads to resistance to the treatment. PDT metronomic regimens (mPDT) involving administering light at a low irradiation intensity over a relatively long period of time could be an alternative to circumvent the limitations of conventional PDT protocols.

Methods: Observational, multicentre study of patients who started DTG/RPV.
In recent years significant efforts have been made to develop new materials for wound dressing with improved healing properties. However, the synthesis methods usually employed to this end are often complex or require several steps. We describe here the synthesis and characterization of antimicrobial reusable dermatological wound dressings based on N-isopropylacrylamide co-polymerized with [2-(Methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride hydrogels (NIPAM-co-METAC).

Although ECP production is attributed to eosinophils, we reported that ECP is also present in neutrophils from allergic patients where, in contrast to eosinophils, it is produced in an IgE-dependent manner. Given the key role of ECP in asthma, we investigated the molecular mechanisms involved in ECP production as well as the effects induced by agonists and widely used clinical approaches.

In this scenario, the measurements of their diffusion rates as well as eventual physicochemical changes in the target tissues are of utmost importance. It is also recognized that the use of natural surfactants can avoid allergic reactions as frequently observed for synthetic products.

Each year a rising number of infections can not be successfully treated owing to the increasing pandemic of antibiotic resistant pathogens. The global shortage of innovative antibiotics fuels the emergence and spread of drug resistant microbes. Basic research, development, and applications of alternative therapies are urgently needed.
