Involvement of ROS in chlorogenic acid-induced apoptosis of Bcr-Abl+ CML cells.

Chlorogenic acid (Chl) has been reported to possess a wide range of biological and pharmacological properties including induction of apoptosis of Bcr-Abl(+) chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cell lines and clinical leukemia samples via inhibition of Bcr-Abl phosphorylation. Here we studied the mechanisms of action of Chl in greater detail. Chl treatment induced an early accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Bcr-Abl(+) cells leading to downregulation of Bcr-Abl phosphorylation and apoptosis.

Influence of the change in stem length on the load transfer and bone remodelling for a cemented resurfaced femur.

The effect of a short-stem femoral resurfacing component on load transfer and potential failure mechanisms has rarely been studied. The stem length has been reduced by approximately 50% as compared to the current long-stem design. Using 3-D FE models of natural and resurfaced femurs, the study is aimed at investigating the influence of a short-stem resurfacing component on load transfer and bone remodelling.

Identification and quantification of the active component quercetin 3-O-rutinoside from Barringtonia racemosa, targets mitochondrial apoptotic pathway in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Barringtonia racemosa has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases. The antitumor property of the seed extract of this plant in mice model promotes us to search for the active component present in the fruit extract. Quercetin 3-O-rutinoside (QOR) has been isolated from the fruits of this plant for the first time and quantified by HPLC method.

Effect of tacrolimus on the excitatory synaptic transmission between the parallel fibers and pyramidal cells in the rat dorsal cochlear nucleus.

Aim: The immunosuppressive drug tacrolimus has several effects on the central nervous system. Besides its protective effect in hearing deficiencies, it is also considered to be able to cause tinnitus. In the present work, we attempted to describe its effects on a characteristic synapse of the auditory system that may be involved in the pathogenesis of tinnitus.

Binding of YC-1/BAY 41-2272 to soluble guanylate cyclase: A new perspective to the mechanism of activation.

Soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC), a heterodimeric heme protein, catalyses the conversion of GTP in to cyclic GMP, which acts as a second messenger in cellular signaling. Nitric oxide activates this enzyme several hundred folds over its basal level. Carbon monoxide, along with some activator molecules like YC-1 and BAY, also synergistically activate sGC.

A serological survey of antibodies against bovine herpesvirus-1 in yak (Poephagus grunniens) in Arunachal Pradesh in India.

Serum samples were collected from 254 yak (Poephagus grunniens, presently Bos grunniens) in different yak tracts of India. These samples were then screened by virus neutralisation test (VNT) and avidin-biotin enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (AB-ELISA) to study the seroprevalence of antibodies against bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1). The overall seroprevalence in yak was found to be 41% (105) by VNT and AB-ELISA.

An Ogawa cholera outbreak 6 months after the Inaba cholera outbreaks in India, 2006.

Background/purpose: Cholera has been reported in the state of Orissa, India during the last decades. An explosive outbreak of diarrhea occurred in Central Cuttack Ward 22 of Orissa (population approximately 10,621), between March 12-23, 2006. This outbreak was investigated by a team from the Regional Medical Research Centre of Bhubaneswar to identify the causative agents and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and associated virulent genes.

An avian influenza A(H11N1) virus from a wild aquatic bird revealing a unique Eurasian-American genetic reassortment.

Influenza surveillance in different wild bird populations is critical for understanding the persistence, transmission and evolution of these viruses. Avian influenza (AI) surveillance was undertaken in wild migratory and resident birds during the period 2007-2008, in view of the outbreaks of highly pathogenic AI (HPAI) H5N1 in poultry in India since 2006. In this study, we present the whole genome sequence data along with the genetic and virological characterization of an Influenza A(H11N1) virus isolated from wild aquatic bird for the first time from India.

Strain and micromotion in intact and resurfaced composite femurs: experimental and numerical investigations.

Understanding the load transfer within a resurfaced femur is necessary to determine the influence of mechanical factors on potential failure mechanisms such as early femoral neck fractures and stress shielding. In this study, an attempt has been made to measure the stem-bone micromotion and implant cup-bone relative displacements (along medial-lateral and anterior-posterior direction), in addition to surface strains at different locations and orientations on the proximal femur and to compare these measurements with those predicted by equivalent FE models. The loading and the support conditions of the experiment were closely replicated in the FE models.

Control of mammary stem cell function by steroid hormone signalling.

The ovarian hormones oestrogen and progesterone profoundly influence breast cancer risk, underpinning the benefit of endocrine therapies in the treatment of breast cancer. Modulation of their effects through ovarian ablation or chemoprevention strategies also significantly decreases breast cancer incidence. Conversely, there is an increased risk of breast cancer associated with pregnancy in the short term.

Transcriptome analyses of mouse and human mammary cell subpopulations reveal multiple conserved genes and pathways.

Introduction: Molecular characterization of the normal epithelial cell types that reside in the mammary gland is an important step toward understanding pathways that regulate self-renewal, lineage commitment, and differentiation along the hierarchy. Here we determined the gene expression signatures of four distinct subpopulations isolated from the mouse mammary gland. The epithelial cell signatures were used to interrogate mouse models of mammary tumorigenesis and to compare with their normal human counterpart subsets to identify conserved genes and networks.

The effects of interfacial conditions and stem length on potential failure mechanisms in the uncemented resurfaced femur.

It is hypothesized that changes in stem length and implant-bone interfacial conditions would affect the mechanical environment within the uncemented resurfaced femur, thereby influencing potential short- and long-term failure mechanisms. This study is aimed at investigating the influence of changes in implant-bone interfacial conditions and stem length on eventual failure, using 3D FE models integrated with bone remodeling simulations. Musculoskeletal forces corresponding to normal walking and stair climbing were used as applied loading conditions.

Evaluation of spermicidal activity of MI-saponin A.

The seed extracts of Madhuca latifolia were reported to have spermicidal activity. The current investigation identified the spermicidal component of the extracts and evaluated its spermicidal potential in vitro. As characterized by infrared, mass, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral analyses, Mi-saponin A (MSA) was found to be the most potent component among a mixture of saponins.

Laparoscopic pyelovesicostomy for giant hydronephrosis in a solitary kidney.

Pyelovesicostomy has rarely been described in the literature. Most of the time this procedure has been performed in cases of ureteral obstruction in an ectopic kidney or in a transplanted kidney. We report the case of a 16-year-old male who presented with a history of large abdominal swelling and pain.

Genotype-phenotype correlation for leber congenital amaurosis in Northern Pakistan.

Objectives: To report the genetic basis of Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) in northern Pakistan and to describe the phenotype.

Methods: DNA from 14 families was analyzed using single-nucleotide polymorphism and microsatellite genotyping and direct sequencing to determine the genes and mutations involved. The history and examination findings from 64 affected individuals were analyzed to show genotype-phenotype correlation and phenotypic progression.

Income and nutritional status of the fishing community residing in coastal bay of Bengal: a case study.

This is part of a project on the disadvantaged, marginalized, vulnerable/weaker section of the population and their survival strategy. The paper presents the results of a survey carried out during 2006-07 with the objective of throwing light on the life and living conditions of an economically weaker community such as 'fishing community' residing in the coastal area of Bay of Bengal in West Bengal and Orissa, India, in the context of global scenario. Various scientists have conducted quite a large number of studies to ascertain the income and nutritional status of people in rural India.

Corchorusin-D, a saikosaponin-like compound isolated from Corchorus acutangulus Lam., targets mitochondrial apoptotic pathways in leukemic cell lines (HL-60 and U937).

Purpose: The presence of triterpene saponins in Corchorus acutangulus Lam. has been reported. However, no studies concerning biological activity of the plant extracts have been done so far.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitory potential of a carbazole alkaloid, mahanimbine, from Murraya koenigii.

In the search for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors from Indian medicinal plants, via bioassay-guided isolation, a carbazole alkaloid, mahanimbine [3, 5-dimethyl-3-(4- methylpent-3-enyl)-11H-pyrano [5, 6-a] carbazole], was isolated from the petroleum ether extract of the leaves of Murraya koenigii. Inhibition of AChE was evaluated based on Ellman's method using 96-well microplate readers. Mahanimbine inhibited AChE activity in a dose-dependent manner with an IC(50) value of 0.

Characterization of the influenza A H5N1 viruses of the 2008-09 outbreaks in India reveals a third introduction and possible endemicity.

Widespread infection of highly pathogenic avian influenza A H5N1 was reported from backyard and commercial poultry in West Bengal (WB), an eastern state of India in early 2008. Infection gradually spread to Tripura, Assam and Sikkim, the northeastern states, with 70 outbreaks reported between January 2008 and May 2009. Whole genome sequence analysis of three isolates from WB, one isolate from Tripura along with the analysis of hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes of 17 other isolates was performed during this study.

An outbreak of cholera associated with an unprotected well in Parbatia, Orissa, Eastern India.

In November 2003, an outbreak (41 cases; attack rate-4.3%; no deaths) of severe diarrhoea was reported from a village in Orissa, eastern India. Thirteen of these cases were hospitalized.

Seminumerical approach for modeling side-polished microstructured optical fiber-based devices.

We developed a simple seminumerical method to model, get design parameters, and estimate performance of side-polished microstructured optical fiber (SPMOF)-based devices. As an example, we analyze a SPMOF directional coupler and show good agreement between the available experimental results and our theoretically estimated characteristics of such a coupler. To further demonstrate the utility of our design approach, we also propose a new wavelength filter design based on the use of a SPMOF half-coupler, which is loaded with an overlay planar waveguide and should find applications as a gain-flattening filter for erbium-doped fiber amplifiers or as a bandstop filter, in general.

Solution-deposited sodium beta-alumina gate dielectrics for low-voltage and transparent field-effect transistors.

Sodium beta-alumina (SBA) has high two-dimensional conductivity, owing to mobile sodium ions in lattice planes, between which are insulating AlO(x) layers. SBA can provide high capacitance perpendicular to the planes, while causing negligible leakage current owing to the lack of electron carriers and limited mobility of sodium ions through the aluminium oxide layers. Here, we describe sol-gel-beta-alumina films as transistor gate dielectrics with solution-deposited zinc-oxide-based semiconductors and indium tin oxide (ITO) gate electrodes.
