Background: Gelation conditions affect the setting of myofibrillar fish protein gels. Therefore the impact of widely applied pre-cooking gelation time/temperature strategies and post-cooking period on the texture and color of final protein gels was determined. Four pre-cooking gelation strategies (no setting time, 30 min at 25 °C, 1 h at 40 °C or 24 h at 4 °C) were applied to protein pastes (fish protein concentrate and standard functional additives).

It is well known that neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is uncommonly associated with pheochromocytoma development and also, to a larger extent, with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). We herein document three cases with the rare condition of NF1 coexisting with GIST and pheochromocytoma, while one of them also has a composite tumor and another has papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Background: Isoelectric solubilization and precipitation (ISP) processing uses pH shifts to separate protein from fish frames, which may increase commercial interest for silver carp. Texture and color properties of gels made from silver carp protein recovered at different pH strategies and organic acid types were compared. ISP was applied to headed gutted silver carp using 10 mol L(-1) sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and either glacial acetic acid (AA) or a (1:1) formic and lactic acid combination (F&L).

During mechanical fish processing, a substantial amount of protein is discarded as by-products. Isoelectric solubilization and precipitation (ISP) is a process that uses extreme pH shifts to solubilize and precipitate protein from by-products to recover previously discarded protein. Typically, strong acids are used for pH reduction, but these acids do not have a pasteurization effect (6 log reduction) on bacterial load; therefore, organic acids were used during ISP processing to test the impact on Listeria innocua concentrations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed laryngeal preneoplastic lesions using classifications from the WHO, Ljubljana, and SINC by multiple observers, focusing on inter-observer agreement (IA).
  • It involved evaluating H&E stained slides from 42 biopsies by 14 participants, with statistical analysis revealing significant differences in diagnoses among participants across the classifications.
  • Although the mean correlation coefficients were higher for WHO compared to Ljubljana, the mean kappa values showed no significant differences, indicating that none of the classifications definitively provided better IA for these lesions.
