Regarding the removal of a gastric bezoar, laparoscopic surgery was performed and it was shown that the laparoscopic approach is safe and feasible. However, the laparoscopic method has the risk of intraabdominal contamination, when the gastric bezoar is retrieved from the gastric lumen in the peritoneal cavity. We developed and applied a new procedure for the removal of the gastric bezoar using one surgical glove and two wound retractors as a fashion of intragastric single port surgery.

We report a case of an 83-year-old gentleman presenting with acute low back pain and radicular left lower extremity pain after golfing. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar spine revealed a low-signal-density lesion compressing the L5 nerve. A computed tomography scan was then ordered, confirming an extra-foraminal disc protrusion at the L5-S1 level, containing a focus of gas that was compressing the left L5 nerve root and communicating with the vacuum disc at L5-S1.

Muscarinic agonists and antagonists are used to treat a handful of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions associated with impaired salivary secretion or altered motility of GI smooth muscle. With regard to exocrine secretion, the major muscarinic receptor expressed in salivary, gastric, and pancreatic glands is the M₃ with a small contribution of the M₁ receptor. In GI smooth muscle, the major muscarinic receptors expressed are the M₂ and M₃ with the M₂ outnumbering the M₃ by a ratio of at least four to one.

Neurotrophins participate in regulating the survival, differentiation, and target innervation of many neurons, mediated by high-affinity Trk and low-affinity p75 receptors. In the cochlea, spiral ganglion (SG) neuron survival is strongly dependent upon neurotrophic input, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which increases the number of neurite outgrowth in neonatal rat SG in vitro. Less is known about signal transduction pathways linking the activation of neurotrophin receptors to SG neuron nuclei.

Background: Inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, known as statins, are commonly used as cholesterol-lowering drugs. During the past decade, evidence has emerged that statins also have neuroprotective effects. Research in the retina has shown that simvastatin, a commonly used statin, increases Akt phosphorylation in vivo, indicating that the PI3K/Akt pathway contributes to the protective effects achieved.

Background And Objectives: Gastric cancer recurrence after curative surgery remains high. Although no preoperative marker of gastric cancer progression after radical gastrectomy exists, recent studies suggest that C-reactive protein (CRP) is associated with cancer progression. Our study evaluated the significance of preoperative high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) levels as a marker of disease progression after radical gastrectomy.

Background: The multifocality rate of EGC ranges from 4 to 20%, but there are few data regarding both lymph node metastasis and feasibility of the endoscopic treatment. We investigated the risk of lymph node metastasis with the purpose to evaluate the potential for endoscopic treatment in patients with multifocal EGC.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent radical gastrectomy to treat EGC between January 2001 and December 2007 at Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea.

Objective: Statins, among the most commonly prescribed medications, are associated with a wide range of musculoskeletal side effects. These include a progressive autoimmune myopathy with anti-3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (anti-HMGCR) antibodies that requires immunosuppression. However, it remains unknown whether these antibodies are found in statin users with and without self-limited musculoskeletal side effects; this limits their diagnostic utility.

Background: Although many reports have indicated the feasibility of laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) regarding short-term surgical outcomes, the role of LG remains controversial because studies of long-term outcomes of LG are insufficient. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term oncologic outcomes of patients who have undergone LG.

Methods: Between May 2003 and December 2009, 714 consecutive patients underwent LG for gastric cancer.

Background And Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of the standardized uptake values (SUV), a semi-quantitative assessment of tumor FDG uptake, as a prognosticator for advanced signet ring cell carcinoma (SRC).

Methods: We reviewed the files of 41 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy for advanced SRC and who had an FDG-PET at initial presentation between September 2003 and December 2007.

Results: The median follow-up period was 30.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (F-18 FDG PET/CT) imaging in the detection of malignant pleural effusion and pleural metastasis in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Materials And Methods: We analyzed F-18 FDG PET/CT images of 33 lung cancer patients with pleural effusion. We used 2 categorical parameters to differentiate malignant from benign pleural effusion: i) quantitative parameters using maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax of effusion and pleura, and the following ratios: lesion to aorta (L/Ao), to cerebellum (L/Cbl), to liver (L/Liv), to nonlesion (L/NL), and to primary lung cancer (L/Prim)) and ii) various parameters determined by PET and CT scans (uptake at the pleural region, Hounsfield unit, size, and morphology of any solid abnormality).

The aim of this study was the development of (⁹⁹m)Tc labeled bis(zinc(II)-dipicolylamine) (Zn²⁺-DPA) coordination complexes, and the in vivo evaluation of their usefulness as radiotracers for the detection of cell death. DPA ligand 1 was labeled with (⁹⁹m)Tc via the (⁹⁹m)Tc-tricarbonyl core ([(⁹⁹m)Tc(CO)₃-1]³⁺) or via HYNIC ((⁹⁹m)Tc-HYNIC-1) in good radiochemical yields. Highest in vitro stabilities were demonstrated for [(⁹⁹m)Tc(CO)₃-1]³⁺.

Purpose: Infection is ubiquitous and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The most reliable method for localizing infection requires radiolabeling autologous white blood cells ex vivo. A compound that can be injected directly into a patient and can selectively image infectious foci will eliminate the drawbacks.

Background: Tumor necrosis factor (TNFA) is the canonical member of the TNF superfamily, which plays a major role in both inflammation and apoptosis. To evaluate the role of TNFs in otitis media (OM), the most common disease of childhood, we evaluated middle ear (ME) expression of genes encoding the TNF and TNF receptor superfamilies during bacterial OM in the mouse, characterized OM in TNFA-deficient mice, and assessed apoptosis during OM in normal versus TNF-deficient MEs.

Results: TNFs and TNF receptors were broadly regulated during OM, with TNFA showing the highest level of up-regulation.

Otitis media (OM), a common infectious disease in children, is associated with bacterial middle ear (ME) infection. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are important mediators of innate immune responses, and TLR9 specifically recognizes the unmethylated cytidine-phosphate-guanosine (CpG) motifs in bacterial DNA. Additional sensors of foreign DNA have recently been identified.
