Objective: Prior studies investigating the use of minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF) for treatment of degenerative lumbar conditions and concomitant sagittal deformity have not stratified patients by preoperative pelvic incidence (PI)-lumbar lordosis (LL) mismatch, which is the earliest parameter to deteriorate in mild sagittal deformity. Thus, the aim of the present study was to determine the impact of preoperative PI-LL mismatch on clinical outcomes and sagittal balance restoration among patients undergoing MI-TLIF for degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS).

Methods: Consecutive adult patients undergoing primary 1-level MI-TLIF between April 2017 and April 2022 for DS with ≥ 6 months radiographic follow-up were included.

Background: Cross-sectional studies revealed that risk factor exposure increases with age but after reaching its peak decreases. This decline may be attributed to higher mortality among exposed individuals, lifestyle, or natural physiological changes related to age. Only prospective observations at the individual level provide credible insights of exposure during the transition from middle to old age.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the carbon footprint (CF) associated with adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery, aiming to fill the gap in research about its environmental impact.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 15 matched pairs of patients who underwent either traditional open surgery or minimally invasive surgery, collecting data on disposables, reusable instruments, anesthetic gases, and energy used.
  • - The findings reveal an average CF of 147.7 kg-COe per surgery, primarily due to energy used for sterilization (54%) and anesthetic gas emissions (17%), suggesting a need for a multidisciplinary approach to reduce carbon emissions in surgical practices.

Protein folding in vivo begins during synthesis on the ribosome and is modulated by molecular chaperones that engage the nascent polypeptide. How these features of protein biogenesis influence the maturation pathway of nascent proteins is incompletely understood. Here, we use hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry to define, at peptide resolution, the cotranslational chaperone-assisted folding pathway of Escherichia coli dihydrofolate reductase.

Inverse association between (poly)phenol intake and age-related disorders has been demonstrated; however, little is known whether they affect comprehensively assessed healthy aging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations between the intake of (poly)phenol (including selected classes and subclasses) and healthy aging scores related to biopsychosocial aspects of health and functioning. A cross-sectional study was performed using data on 9774 randomly selected citizens of Krakow (Poland) who were 45-69 years of age.

The 11S globulin legumin typically accounts for approximately 3% of the total protein in common beans (). It was previously reported that a legumin peptide of approximately 20 kDa is resistant to pepsin digestion. Sequence prediction suggested that the pepsin-resistant peptide is located at the C-terminal end of the α-subunit, within a glutamic acid-rich domain, overlapping with a chymotrypsin-resistant peptide.

Article Synopsis
  • The study used a retrospective cohort design to investigate the impact of bracing on proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) after adult spinal deformity correction.
  • Starting in 2021, patients who underwent lower thoracic fusions were braced for the first 6 weeks post-surgery, and a non-braced group was matched for comparison based on various factors.
  • Results indicated that braced patients experienced significantly lower rates of PJK at one year compared to non-braced patients, suggesting the potential benefits of extension bracing and paving the way for future studies.

Aims: The Southern European Atlantic diet (SEAD) is the traditional dietary pattern of northwestern Spain and northern Portugal, but it may resemble that of central, eastern, and western European countries. The SEAD has been found associated with lower risk of myocardial infarction and mortality in older adults, but it is uncertain whether this association also exists in other European populations and if it is similar as that found in its countries of origin.

Methods And Results: We conducted a prospective analysis of four cohorts with 35 917 subjects aged 18-96 years: ENRICA (Spain), HAPIEE (Czechia and Poland), and Whitehall II (United Kingdom).
