A standardized approach to airway management during Abbé flap reconstruction.

Background: The Abbé flap is a two-staged procedure to address upper lip tightness, creating a surgically closed mouth during the first stage. Airway manipulation and management in the setting of a surgically closed mouth presents a challenge from an anesthetic standpoint.

Aims: This study aims to describe the authors' standardized approach to airway management in cleft lip patients undergoing Abbé flap reconstruction.

Sacral Erector Spinae Plane Block for Gender Reassignment Surgery.

The erector spinae plane block (ESPB) is an interfascial plane block that has been used to provide perioperative analgesia for a variety of indications. This case report describes the novel use of the sacral ESPB on a transgender patient undergoing male-to-female gender reassignment surgery for perioperative pain control. The sacral ESPB technique was described and post-operative pain score and opioid requirements were reported.

T1 Erector Spinae Plane Block Catheter As a Novel Treatment Modality for Pancoast Tumor Pain.

Pancoast tumors are non-small cell lung tumors, which can invade the ribs, vertebrae, sympathetic ganglia and brachial plexus. In this study, a patient with right-sided Pancoast tumor presented with intractable chronic pain on the right neck, upper extremity and chest wall. The chronic pain associated with Pancoast tumor, which was difficult to treat with opioids and other medications, was effectively treated with a high-thoracic erector spinae plane block (ESPB).

Clinical Case of the Month: Group G Streptococcal Bacteremia Secondary to a Burn Wound Infection.

A 61-year-old man presented to the emergency department with second degree burns along his right arm and hand. He reported that his knees suddenly gave out while holding a pot of soup resulting in the scalding liquid spilling over his arm. His medical history is significant for alcohol abuse, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, chronic knee instability, and degenerative joint disease of the spine.

Characteristics and genotype profiles of antiretroviral-naïve patients entering a Southern US HIV outpatient clinic 2009-2012.

The US city of New Orleans was ranked second in the nation for estimated HIV case rates in 2011. Opt-out testing was established at the Interim Louisiana Hospital in New Orleans in 2013. The majority of new diagnoses were referred to the HIV outpatient program.
