Background Clinicians use prognostic biomarker/multi-gene-based tests for predicting recurrence in hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative (HR+/HER2-) early-stage breast cancer (EBC). CanAssist Beast (CAB) uses the expression of five protein biomarkers in combination with tumor-specific parameters such as tumor size, histopathological grade, and lymph node status to predict the risk of distant recurrence within five years of diagnosis for patients with HR+/HER2-, EBC. The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of prognostic tests on adjuvant chemotherapy decisions by assessing the agreement between clinical and CAB risk stratification as low-risk (LR) or high-risk (HR) for distant recurrence.

Carbon dioxide gas emboli is a potentially fatal complication that occurs more frequently during laparoscopic hepatectomy compared to other laparoscopic surgeries. The patient featured in this report had massive gas embolism confirmed by intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) that were associated with episodes of severe hypoxemia, hemodynamic instability, and right ventricular failure requiring conversion to open hepatectomy. Abrupt abdominal decompression resulted in massive hemorrhage from a previously undetected defect in the middle hepatic vein.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, is intrinsically resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics and primarily affects immunocompromised individuals, such as those with poorly controlled diabetes or malignancies. In this case, a 58-y-old female farmer with poorly controlled diabetes (HbA1c of 11.4%), metastatic breast cancer with chemotherapy-induced pancytopenia and disseminated melioidosis showed no improvement despite receiving antibiotics and supportive care.

Researchers and clinicians often use the six-item abbreviated Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian (PCL-6) for screening; however, the PCL-6 has not been validated for parents of children with cancer. Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 3 (PFIC-3) is a rare disorder characterized by chronic cholestasis usually progressing to end-stage liver disease (ESLD) within the first two decades of life. PFIC-3 is caused by pathogenic genetic variants of the ATP-binding cassette 4 (ABCB4) gene with variable inheritance; the most common is autosomal recessive. Long-read sequencing (LRS) technologies have the potential to revolutionize scientific discoveries in RNA biology through the comprehensive identification and quantification of full-length mRNA isoforms. Despite great promise, challenges remain in the widespread implementation of LRS technologies for RNA-based applications, including concerns about low coverage, high sequencing error, and robust computational pipelines.
