Turning to peeling in a dermatological sphere is extensively common and has been used for a long time. From the use of single acids moving on to the so-called compound peelings (associations of more than one substance in the same product) and the combined peelings which take advantage of the action of different substances in a synergistic manner (different products are applied sequentially) in order to best guarantee a greater effectiveness of the treatment for the recommended target. Superficial peelings, combined and not, have led to a drastic reduction in the percentage of incidence of adverse events typical of medium and deep peels.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFImatinib (IM) is considered the gold standard for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment, although resistance is emerging as a significant problem. The proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) play an important role in cell proliferation, survival, and resistance to glucocorticoid-mediated cell death. Several transcription factors such as NF-KB and AP-1 are activated in response to physiopathological increases and modulation of intracellular calcium levels.

Although it is commonly labeled as an aesthetic problem, it may also determine airway obstruction and because of its nature to hide the growth of tumors. Due to the increasing number of reports of nonmelanoma skin types of cancer within rhinophyma, further concern about a higher incidence of malignancies in rhinophyma than in the skin of normal noses is reasonable.

Calcium may act directly on cellular enzymes and in conjunction with other cellular metabolites, such as cyclic nucleotides, to regulate cell functions. Alteration in the ionized calcium concentration in the cytosol has been implicated in the initiation of secretion, contraction, and cell proliferation as well as the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been correlates with normal cell proliferation through activation of growth-related signaling pathways.

Methods: The study used qualitative research methods in the form of focus groups and individual interviews with six target groups, comprising parents of preschool children, parents of primary and high school students, high school students, early childhood staff, school teachers and General Practitioners. Participants were recruited through early childhood centres, schools and Divisions of General Practice in four locations, including rural, low, medium and high socioeconomic areas in one state in Australia.

Aim: The perceptions of parents of school-aged children regarding child and adolescent overweight and obesity were examined.
Method: Parents with children in primary and secondary schools in socio-economically diverse areas across metropolitan Sydney and rural New South Wales, Australia, were recruited for focus group discussions. Content analysis was used to analyse the focus group transcripts.
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare neuroendocrine cutaneous malignancy that predominantly arises in the head and neck region. We describe clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment in 4 cases of MCC, presenting an uncommon female predominant occurrence and an unusual primary site: the lower limb. In all cases diagnosis was established by histopathologic examination.

Health promotion planning must be informed by the knowledge, perceptions, motivations and perceived needs of the target population, but little is known about how adolescents perceive overweight and obesity, its causes and solutions.
Methods: A cross-sectional, non-representative sample of 12- to 17-year-old boys and girls (n = 58) attending schools in diverse metropolitan areas and one rural area in NSW, Australia.
Aim: To investigate the perceptions of parents of young children aged 2-5 years regarding childhood overweight and obesity.
Methods: Parents with children in seven pre-schools and long day-care centres from diverse socio-economic areas across metropolitan Sydney and one rural area were recruited for focus groups. Focus group transcripts were analysed using content analysis.
Issue Addressed: The perceptions of staff from the early childhood sector in New South Wales (NSW) regarding issues related to childhood overweight and obesity were examined.
Methods: Eight pre-schools and long day care centres were recruited from suburbs of diverse socio-economic backgrounds in three metropolitan and one rural area in NSW. Centre directors and staff participated in in-depth interviews and a thematic analysis of their responses was performed.
Background: GPs can potentially play a significant role in assessing weight status, providing advice, and making referrals to address overweight and obesity and its consequences among children and adolescents.
Aim: To investigate the perceptions of GPs about overweight and obesity in children and adolescents, including the extent to which they perceive it as a concern, the factors they see as causal, what actions they consider might be needed, and their sense of responsibility and self-efficacy.
Design Of Study: A cross-sectional qualitative study of GPs' perceptions.
This study evaluated the impact of a new epoetin alfa dosing regimen on quality of life (QOL), transfusion requirements, and hemoglobin (Hb) levels in 133 patients with low-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and Hb < or =10 g/dl. Epoetin alfa 40,000 IU was given subcutaneously twice weekly; after 4 weeks, the dose could be reduced to 40,000 IU weekly in patients achieving erythroid response. QOL was assessed using the functional assessment of cancer therapy-anemia (FACT-An) questionnaire.

This paper reports the first observation of this variant in Campania, Southern Italy, in two unrelated patients suffering from mild anemia. The variant was separated from Hb A by cation exchange chromatography on a high performance liquid chromatographic system with an automated procedure that might be useful for diagnostic purposes.

We investigated whether the subtraction of NF-kappa B/Rel activity influenced the response of 11 AML (M1, M2 and M4) patients' cells to AraC. To this end we used a phosphorothioate double-stranded decoy oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) carrying the NF-kappa B/Rel- consensus sequence.

This on-again, off-again funding pattern provides a natural experiment for estimating the short-run effect of changes in the cost of abortions on the number of abortions to indigent women. Using an unusually detailed dataset, we estimate the effects of funding termination on the monthly abortion and birth rates.

We have designed a first-line five-drug regimen (vincristine, idarubicin, cyclophosphamide, etoposide and deflazacort), with the aim of potentiating the CHOP protocol without losing tolerability and ease of administration. Seventy-one patients (33% aged > or = 65) entered the study.

Results of multivariate analyses show a U-shaped relationship between maternal age and low birth weight among whites, with the youngest (younger than 15) and oldest (aged 40 and older) mothers being at higher risk than 25-29-year-olds; older teenagers were not at any significantly increased risk. Among blacks, however, 15-19-year-olds faced significantly lower risks of delivering low-birth-weight babies than did black women aged 25-29.

Several hypotheses have been advanced to explain this property of neoplastic cells. In recent years, some calcium-channel blockers have successfully been used to restore drug-sensitivity in previously resistant tumors.

In most people with red-blood-cell glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, the enzyme-deficient phenotype is only moderately expressed in nucleated cells. However, in a small subset of hemizygous males who suffer from chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia, the underlying mutations (designated class I) cause more-severe G6PD deficiency, and this might provide an opportunity for selection in heterozygous females during development.

The authors document distinct racial differences in family norms and the sanctions that supported those norms. Giving birth outside a marital relationship was clearly not the stigmatizing event for African-Americans that it was for whites.

In order to help clarify the molecular basis of this association, we have carried out a detailed biochemical and genetic characterization of two G6PD deficient brothers affected by CNSHA. The G6PD from the two patients has altered electrophoretic mobility, abnormally elevated Michaelis constant (Km) for G6P, and extreme instability in vivo and in vitro.
