Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia is commonly treated with systemic antibiotics to ensure adequate treatment of multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. However, intravenous (IV) antibiotics often achieve suboptimal pulmonary concentrations. We therefore aimed to evaluate the effect of inhaled amikacin (AMK) plus IV meropenem (MEM) on bactericidal efficacy in a swine model of monolateral MDR P.

Therefore, this study aims to develop and validate the Parents' Healthcare Needs Scale for adolescents with CHD (PHNS-CHD).
Design And Methods: A multi-method approach and multi-phase design were employed.
Background: Mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) has been proposed as a potential strategy to generate high expiratory flows and simulate cough in the critically ill. However, efficacy and safety of MI-E during invasive mechanical ventilation are still to be fully elucidated. This study in intubated and mechanically ventilated pigs aimed to evaluate the effects of 8 combinations of insufflation-exsufflation pressures during MI-E on mucus displacement, respiratory flows, as well as respiratory mechanics and hemodynamics.

Currently, there are no available models of severe pneumococcal pneumonia in mechanically ventilated animals to mimic clinical conditions of critically ill patients. We studied endogenous pulmonary flora in 4 healthy pigs and in an additional 10 pigs in which we intra-bronchially instilled S.

We aim to determine the short-term benefits of appropriate empirical antimicrobial treatment (AEAT) with ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T) compared with IEAT with piperacillin/tazobactam (TZP) in MDR pneumonia. Twenty-one pigs with pneumonia caused by an XDR strain (susceptible to C/T but resistant to TZP) were ventilated for up to 72 h.

Current guidelines recommend vancomycin and linezolid as first-line agents against methicillin-resistant (MRSA) nosocomial pneumonia. Telavancin is a potential new therapeutic alternative, specifically in monomicrobial MRSA pneumonia. This study compared the efficacies of telavancin versus linezolid in a porcine model of severe MRSA pneumonia.

HSR has brought impacts which have been widely studied in different countries in relation to the different socioeconomic, territorial and transport characteristics. This paper analyses the economic growth, the transport accessibility and the social impacts observed in Italy after ten years of HSR operation, as well as the estimated impacts of the system completion.

Seminal studies have demonstrated that tracheally intubated, mechanically ventilated patients, positioned in supine horizontal position, are at a high risk of developing ventilator-associated pneumonia, through aspiration of gastric pathogens. In the 1990s, innovative clinical findings promoted a radical change in practice, through the use of the semirecumbent position in all mechanically ventilated patients. Here, we critically review the main indications, pulmonary effects, and controversies on the use of the semirecumbent position.

We used the fact that the proportions between the radiologic projections of the posterior and anterior sides of the C4 vertebral body, which forms a trapezoidal shape, differ with age: in younger individuals, the posterior side is higher, whereas in older individuals, the projections of the sides of the vertebral body form a rectangular shape with the two sides equal or with the anterior side slightly higher. Cephalograms of 444 Italian subjects (214 female and 230 male individuals) aged between 5 and 15 years and with no obvious development abnormalities were analyzed.

The aim of this paper was to study a sample of peri-apical X-ray images of upper and lower incisors, both lateral and medial, to examine the application of pulp/tooth area ratio as an indicator of age. A sample of 116 individuals, 62 men and 54 women, aged between 18 and 74 years, was studied.
