Background: Mental illness remains a major global health challenge largely due to the absence of definitive biomarkers applicable to diagnostics and care processes. Although remote sensing technologies, embedded in devices such as smartphones and wearables, offer a promising avenue for improved mental health assessments, their clinical integration has been slow.

We present a comprehensive sequence and bioinformatic analysis of the prototypical microcin plasmid, pMccb17, which includes a definitive sequence for the microcin operon, mcb. Microcin B17 (MccB17) is a ribosomally synthesized and posttranslationally modified peptide produced by Escherichia coli. It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase similarly to quinolone antibiotics.

Introduction: Population health surveys are used to record person-reported outcome measures for chronic health conditions and provide a useful source of data when evaluating potential disease burdens. The reliability of survey-based prevalence estimates for chronic diseases is unclear nonetheless. This study applied methodological triangulation via a data linkage method to validate prevalence of selected chronic conditions (angina, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and asthma).

The Chemical Characterization of Nigerian Propolis samples and Their Activity Against Trypanosoma brucei.

Profiling of extracts from twelve propolis samples collected from eight regions in Nigeria was carried out using high performance liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with evaporative light scattering (ELSD), ultraviolet detection (UV) and mass spectrometry (MS), gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). Principal component analysis (PCA) of the processed LC-MS data demonstrated the varying chemical composition of the samples. Most of the samples were active against Trypanosoma b.

Chemical and Antimicrobial Profiling of Propolis from Different Regions within Libya.

Extracts from twelve samples of propolis collected from different regions of Libya were tested for their activity against Trypanosoma brucei, Leishmania donovani, Plasmodium falciparum, Crithidia fasciculata and Mycobacterium marinum and the cytotoxicity of the extracts was tested against mammalian cells. All the extracts were active to some degree against all of the protozoa and the mycobacterium, exhibiting a range of EC50 values between 1.65 and 53.

In vitro, Giardia encysts when bile sequesters lipids necessary for this lipid auxotroph, and in vivo they encyst to infect new hosts. In this study, we investigated, for the first time, commitment to encystment in Giardia using both molecular and cellular techniques.

Identification of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-specific peptides for targeted photoantimicrobial chemotherapy.

The increasing prevalence of multi-drug resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), necessitates development of alternative modes of bacterial targeting which are not hindered by antibiotic resistance and minimise collateral damage. To achieve this, the FliTrx™ bacterially-displayed peptide library was panned against MRSA and randomly selected clones (n = 20) were DNA sequenced. Using home telehealth to empower patients to monitor and manage long term conditions.

This article describes a pilot telehealth project in Swansea where patients with heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were provided with telehealth monitoring equipment. While early evaluation points to some potential economic benefits, supporting patient empowerment was a significant outcome.

Bioactivity as an options value of sea cucumbers in the Egyptian Red Sea.

The utility of a species can be divided into its direct, indirect, and options values. In the marine environment, direct consumptive values predominate and often lead to overexploitation at the expense of significant options values derived through bioprospecting for natural products. We surveyed the waters of the Egyptian Red Sea coast (Gulf of Aqaba [north] and the Red Sea [south]) for species of sea cucumbers and analyzed extracts from species for a range of bioactivities with potential biomedical applications.

Two-photon excitation studies of m-THPC photosensitizer and photodynamic activity in an epithelial cell line.
