Developing bottom drifters to better understand the stranding locations of cold-stunned sea turtles in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts.

Every fall, juvenile sea turtles in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean are threatened by rapidly declining water temperatures. When sea turtles become hypothermic, or cold-stunned, they lose mobility-either at the surface, subsurface, or the bottom of the water column-and eventually strand at the shoreline where rescue teams associated with the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network may search for them. Understanding the effects of ocean currents on the potential stranding locations of cold-stunned sea turtles is essential to better understand stranding hotspots and increase the probability of successful discovery and recovery of turtles before they die in the cold temperatures.

Relationship between in feed drugs, antibiotics and organic enrichment in marine sediments at Canadian Atlantic salmon aquaculture sites.

The presence of in-feed anti-sea lice drugs and their relationship with organic enrichment is poorly understood in sediment surrounding salmon farms. Using data from an aquaculture monitoring program (2018-2020), we describe this relationship at ten sites in four Canadian provinces. Three anti-sea lice pesticides (lufenuron, teflubenzuron, emamectin benzoate and metabolite desmethyl emamectin benzoate), and one antibiotic (oxytetracycline) were detected.

Individualised Nutritional Care for Disease-Related Malnutrition: Improving Outcomes by Focusing on What Matters to Patients.

Delivering care that meets patients' preferences, needs and values, and that is safe and effective is key to good-quality healthcare. Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) has profound effects on patients and families, but often what matters to patients is not captured in the research, where the focus is often on measuring the adverse clinical and economic consequences of DRM. Differences in the terminology used to describe care that meets patients' preferences, needs and values confounds the problem.

Assessing trace-elements as indicators of marine finfish aquaculture across three distinct Canadian coastal regions.

Several trace-elements have been identified as indicators of finfish aquaculture organic enrichment. In this study, sediment sampling at finfish farms was completed as part of an Aquaculture Monitoring Program in three distinct Canadian regions. Despite diverse datasets, multivariate analyses show a consistent clustering of known direct (Cu and Zn) and indirect (Cd, Mo and U) tracers of aquaculture activities with sediment organic matter (OM) and/or total dissolved sulfides concentrations.

On simulating cold-stunned sea turtle strandings on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Kemp's ridley sea turtles were on the verge of extinction in the 1960s. While these sea turtles have slowly recovered, they are still critically endangered. In the last few years, the number of strandings on the beaches of Cape Cod, Massachusetts has increased by nearly an order of magnitude relative to preceding decades.

Use of Integra dermal substitute to prevent implantable device extrusion in an Olympic athlete.

We present a challenging case of imminent metallic implant extrusion in a Paralympic athlete managed with a single-stage procedure using 'Integra' dermal substitute. The patient had hereditary spastic paraparesis, for which a baclofen pump delivering intrathecal medication was vital in the management of his condition. The device had been most recently implanted into the thigh after previous complications.

Pelvic and buttock hypoplasia reconstructed with anatomical breast implants.

Radiation therapy is used in the management of a number of childhood cancers and can have significant effects on skeletal growth. We present the case of a 35-year-old woman who developed a hypoplastic pelvis and buttocks following radiotherapy for rhabdomyosarcoma of the vagina at the age of 2. At the age of 25, the patient underwent bilateral buttock augmentation with a two-stage reconstruction using tissue expansion followed by definitive augmentation with anatomical breast implant insertion.

Peri-colonic haematoma following routine colonoscopy.

Introduction: We present a case of an extra-luminal haematoma following routine colonoscopy. This case highlights an uncommon but potentially life threatening complication in which there is little published literature to date.

Presentation Of Case: A 73 year old male presented with abdominal pain and a reduction in haemoglobin following an uneventful colonoscopy.

Recreational cocaine use is associated with attenuated latent inhibition.

Introduction: Evidence has linked chronic cocaine use with various cognitive deficits; however few studies have investigated the effects of recreational (non-dependent) use. The present study aimed to assess whether recreational users show deficits in latent inhibition (LI: a measure of delayed learning of an association between 2 stimuli, one of which has been previously exposed (PE) without consequence and thus deemed irrelevant).

Methods: Using a quasi-experimental between groups design, recreational cocaine users (n = 21), poly-drug users (n = 17) and drug-naive controls (n = 18) were compared on a LI task.

Pseudoseptic arthritis is an increasingly recognised entity. It is an inflammatory arthritis that mimics septic arthritis; however, Gram stain and cultures are persistently negative. It is a diagnosis of exclusion.

Background: Accurate workplace injury data are useful in the prioritization of prevention strategies. In the UK, physicians report workplace ill-health data within The Health and Occupation Research (THOR) network, including injury case reports.

The little known Mineral and Chemical History of Iron and A History of Brass by an eighteenth-century technologist, William Lewis (1708-1781).

Sometime during the 1920s, Cardiff Public Libraries (later to become Cardiff Central Library) acquired a six-volume handwritten manuscript collection entitled Mineral & Chemical History of Iron. The author of the manuscripts is named as William Lewis. Now uniformly bound in half-leather and cloth boards, this impressive holding provides, in more than a thousand handwritten pages, an early attempt to produce a full-scale treatise in English on the history of iron.

Background: While much is known about the effect of work stress on an employee's home life, less is known about the opposite effect, that of domestic worries upon work performance.

Aims: To investigate employee perceptions about the effect of family to work conflict (FWC) on work.

Methods: An online anonymous survey tool was developed and sent to all employees reporting to a single onsite human resources (HR) department at a UK research and development plant.

In adults, stem cells are responsible for the maintenance of many actively renewing tissues, such as haematopoietic, skin, gut and germinal tissues. These stem cells can self-renew or be committed to becoming progenitors. Stem-cell commitment is thought to be irreversible but in male and female Drosophila melanogaster, it was shown recently that differentiating germ cells can revert to functional stem cells that can restore germinal lineage.

[Maxillar osteonecrosis associated with bisphosphonate treatment and dental implants].

Introduction: Bisphosphosnates are reference products used to treat osteoporosis, malignant bone disease, Paget's disease, and hypercalcemia. However these drugs seem to induce osteonecrosis of the jaws. This osteonecrosis is frequently observed and must be evoked in patients presenting with oral ulceration under bisphosphonate therapy.

Hydrographics and the timing of infectious salmon anemia outbreaks among Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) farms in the Quoddy region of Maine, USA and New Brunswick, Canada.

Infectious salmon anemia (ISA) has caused severe morbidity and mortality in farmed Atlantic salmon in North America, Norway, Scotland and the Faroe Islands. The Quoddy region of Maine, United States of America (USA), and New Brunswick (NB), Canada is characterized by extensive tidal mixing and close proximity between farms. This region is also prone to recurrent appearances of ISA, though control measures limit disease spread and severity on infected farms.

The effect of transdermal nicotine patches on sleep and dreams.

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of 24-h transdermal nicotine patches on sleep and dream mentation in 15 smokers aged 20 to 33. Utilising a repeated measures design, it was found that more time awake and more ASDA micro-arousals occurred while wearing the nicotine patch compared to placebo. Also, the percentage of REM sleep decreased, but REM latency and the proportion of time spent in NREM sleep stages did not change significantly.

[Radiation-induced mucositis of the aerodigestive tract: prevention and treatment. MASCC/ISOO mucositis group's recommendations].

Acute mucositis is the main intensity-limiting toxicity in the management of head and neck (H&N) and digestive track carcinomas with radiotherapy. New radiation modalities (hyperfractionation and/or acceleration) as well as combined modality regimens in this situation induce higher rates of acute toxicity. Hyperfractionation for example allows higher control rates, with few late toxicities, but it slightly increases acute mucositis.
