Cassini radar views the surface of Titan.

The Cassini Titan Radar Mapper imaged about 1% of Titan's surface at a resolution of approximately 0.5 kilometer, and larger areas of the globe in lower resolution modes. The images reveal a complex surface, with areas of low relief and a variety of geologic features suggestive of dome-like volcanic constructs, flows, and sinuous channels.

Dose dependent accretion of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in cardiac membranes of rats fed egg yolk powder enriched in DHA.

We tested the hypothesis that enrichment of the diet with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) enriched egg yolk powder could modify specifically the (n-3) fatty acids content of rat plasma, red blood cells and heart membranes. Dose-dependent effect of DHA was studied in rats supplemented during 4 weeks. Three groups of adult male rats, DHA10, DHA35 and DHA60 (n = 5 each), had their diet supplemented with 10 mg, 35 mg or 60 mg DHA/kg body weight/day, respectively.

Protective effect of a low K+ cardioplegic solution on myocardial Na,K-ATPase activity.

Long duration ischemia in hypothermic conditions followed by reperfusion alters membrane transport function and in particular Na,K-ATPase. We compared the protective effect of two well-described cardioplegic solutions on cardiac Na,K-ATPase activity during reperfusion after hypothermic ischemia. Isolated perfused rat hearts (n = 10) were arrested with CRMBM or UW cardioplegic solutions and submitted to 12 hr of ischemia at 4 degrees C in the same solution followed by 60 min of reperfusion.

Purpose: To compare a single intraoperative sub-Tenon's capsule triamcinolone acetonide injection with steroid drops in the treatment of ocular inflammation after cataract surgery.

Design: Randomized, double-masked controlled trial.

Participants: A total of 100 patients were randomized prospectively into 2 groups: 50 patients treated with 1% prednisolone eyedrops (control group A) and 50 patients treated with sub-Tenon's capsule triamcinolone (treatment group B).

In 2002, the Italian guidelines for eligibility of patients for intestinal transplantation (ITx) were defined as: life-threatening complications of home parenteral nutrition (HPN), lack of venous access for HPN, locally invasive tumors of the abdomen, Chronic intestinal failure (CIF) with a high risk of mortality, primary disease-related poor quality of life (QoL) despite optimal HPN. Our aim was to identify potential candidates for ITx according to these national guidelines among patients managed by a medical referral center for CIF. The SF-36 instrument for the follow-up of health-related quality-of-life assessment of patients undergoing home parenteral nutrition for benign disease.

Introduction: The non-disease-specific SF-36 instrument was applied to detect changes in quality of life among patients at a single center who were receiving home parenteral nutrition (HPN) for intestinal failure.

Methods: All HPN patients completed the questionnaire during routine visits. The SF-36 examines eight domains (scores: 0% to 100%): physical functioning (PF), role-functioning physical (RP), body pain (BP), general health (GH), vitality (VT), social functioning (SF), as well as role-functioning emotional (RE) and mental health (MH).

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is associated with a stimulation of cortisol which lasts 24 hours in patients treated by thrombolysis. Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is an alternative treatment for AMI which reduces the length of myocardial ischemia. Our objective was the determination of the amplitude and duration of cortisol and other hormones of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis release in patients undergoing PTCA.

An investigation of semantic errors in unimpaired and Alzheimer's speakers of Italian.

Semantic errors are a common type of slip of the tongue for normal speakers; they are also considered to be the hallmark of progressive diseases that affect semantic memory such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and semantic dementia. In unimpaired speakers, semantic errors have been shown to be affected by syntactic variables. For example, Marx (1999) has shown that speakers of a gendered language such as German tend to substitute a target with another word that shares the same grammatical gender with the target more often than chance would predict.

Avian infectious bronchitis: characterization of new isolates from Italy.

The isolation of four new variants or serotypes of avian infectious bronchitis virus in Italy is reported. The antigenic characteristics of these strains were investigated by cross-neutralization tests with the new isolates, Fa 6881/97, AZ 27/98, AZ 20/97, and BS 216/01; two of the most common European serotypes, AZ 23/74 and CR 88121 (793B); and the classic Massachusetts M41 serotype in association with a panel of 17 specific antisera. On the basis of the results obtained, the new isolates show relevant serologic differences.

Background: Previous reports that used head-up tilt testing and adenosine administration have suggested that adenosine may be an important endogenous mediator that may trigger a vasovagal response in susceptible patients. However, little is known regarding endogenous adenosine plasma levels (APLs) during vasovagal syncope provoked by tilt testing. The aim of this study was to determine whether APLs differ in patients with a positive head-up tilt test compared with those with a negative test and whether APLs are modified during tilt-induced vasovagal syncope.

[Cardioversion by external electric shock for atrial fibrillation: does patient age affect immediate results?].

The restoration of sinus rhythm by external electric shock in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation is a well established treatment. However, in current practice this treatment is generally indicated less in the elderly subject although this attitude is not factual. The objective of this work was to evaluate the immediate results of cardioversion by external electric shock, comparing the success rates in four age groups: under 60 years, between 60 and 69 years, between 70 and 79 years, and over 80 years.

Background: Patency of infarct-related artery in patients who suffered an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has been shown to be associated with improved survival. Ventricular tachyarrhythmias induced by programmed electrical stimulation may be predictive of arrhythmic events and sudden death.

Hypothesis: The study was undertaken to assess the possible effect of a patent infarct-related coronary artery on induced ventricular tachyarrhythmias during programmed ventricular stimulation in survivors of AMI.

RT-PCR detection of the Na,K-ATPase beta3-isoform in human heart.

The Na,K-ATPase is a heterodimer composed of an alpha-catalytic and a beta-glycoprotein subunit. At present, three different alpha-polypeptides (alpha1, alpha2, alpha3) and two distinct beta-isoforms (beta1 and beta2) have been detected in human heart. The aim of the present study was to determine whether or not the beta3-isoform of the Na,K-ATPase can be detected in human heart.

The Na,K-ATPase function appears impaired in human heart failure with dilation; however little is known in animal model with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. We studied Na,K-ATPase isoform composition and activity from cardiomyopathic hamsters of the MS 200 strain with pure dilated cardiomyopathy and compared them with those of healthy Syrian hamsters. 150-day-old male MS 200 Syrian hamsters (n = 16) and sex- and age-matched healthy Syrian hamsters (n = 15) were used.

To evaluate the effect of R-ORS in patients with total colectomy and high intestinal output, a perspective open noncontrolled study was performed on 13 adult patients who consumed 1 l/day of R-ORS for 7 days.
