Introduction: Disorders of consciousness (DoC) represent a range of clinical states, affect hundreds of thousands of people in the United States, and have relatively poor outcomes. With few effective pharmacotherapies, neuromodulation has been investigated as an alternative for treating DoC. To summarize the available evidence, a systematic review of studies using various forms of neuromodulation to treat DoC was conducted.

Enhanced memory for emotional experiences is hypothesized to depend on amygdala-hippocampal interactions during memory consolidation. Here we show using intracranial recordings from the human amygdala and the hippocampus during an emotional memory encoding and discrimination task increased awake ripples after encoding of emotional, compared to neutrally-valenced stimuli. Further, post-encoding ripple-locked stimulus similarity is predictive of later memory discrimination.

Objective: Despite its relatively low prevalence, schizophrenia has a high burden of illness due to its lifelong effects and the fact that it is often refractory to psychotropic treatment. This review investigated how neurosurgical interventions, primarily neuromodulation through deep brain stimulation (DBS), can mitigate treatment-refractory schizophrenia. Pathophysiological data and ongoing clinical trials were reviewed to suggest which targets hold promise for neurosurgical efficacy.

Introduction: The prevalence of behavioral health disorders in children is approximately 15%-20%, yet less than half of the children ever receive treatment for these conditions. The lack of access to behavioral health care is common in urban areas but even more difficult to access in rural areas. Screening for behavioral health in a primary care setting is one of the first strategies to reduce this problem and improve access to care.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found that the brain works best when it's close to something called the "edge-of-chaos" point, which helps it process a lot of information while we're awake.
  • They tested different brain states, like being awake, having seizures, being under anesthesia, and using psychedelics, to see how close the brain is to this critical point.
  • The research also suggests that checking how close someone's brain activity is to this edge-of-chaos point could help doctors figure out how conscious a person is when they're not fully awake.

Background: Leukoencephalopathy with brain calcifications and cysts (LCC; also known as Labrune syndrome) is a rare genetic microangiopathy caused by biallelic mutations in SNORD118. The mechanisms by which loss-of-function mutations in SNORD118 lead to the phenotype of leukoencephalopathy, calcifications and intracranial cysts is unknown.

Case Presentation: We present the histopathology of a 36-year-old woman with ataxia and neuroimaging findings of diffuse white matter abnormalities, cerebral calcifications, and parenchymal cysts, in whom the diagnosis of LCC was confirmed with genetic testing.

Because of its involvement in a wide variety of cardiovascular, metabolic and behavioural functions, the hypothalamus constitutes a potential target for neuromodulation in a number of treatment-refractory conditions. The precise neural substrates and circuitry subserving these responses, however, are poorly characterized to date. We sought to retrospectively explore the acute sequelae of hypothalamic region deep brain stimulation and characterize their neuroanatomical correlates.
