Introduction: Respiratory adverse events are common during the sedation of preterm babies, often needing active airway support. During magnetic resonance imaging, this occurrence could extend the acquisition time, with a negative impact on the thermic and metabolic homeostasis. The aim of the study is to verify if lying in a lateral position instead of supine could improve the safe quality of sedation, without worsening the quality of imaging.

Male infertility is a risk factor for the development of testicular germ cell tumors. In this study, we investigated microRNA profiles in seminal plasma to identify potential noninvasive biomarkers able to discriminate the men at highest risk of developing cancer among the infertile population. We compared the microRNA profiles of individuals affected by testicular germ cell tumors and healthy individuals with normal or impaired spermiograms using high-throughput technology and confirmed the results by single-assay digital PCR.

Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) testing is pivotal to help diagnose patients with a suspected autoimmune disease. The Indirect Immunofluorescence (IIF) microscopy performed with human epithelial type 2 (HEp-2) cells as the substrate is the reference method for ANA screening. It allows for the detection of antibodies binding to specific intracellular targets, resulting in various staining patterns that should be identified for diagnosis purposes.

Children and adolescents face a wide variety of developmental changes and environmental challenges, and it is estimated that at least one in five children aged 3-17 will experience behavioral or mental health issues. This period of life coincides with major changes in brain structure and function that have profound long-term consequences for learning, decision-making (including risk taking), and emotional processing. For example, continued development of the prefrontal cortex in adolescence is a sensitive period during which individuals are particularly susceptible to risky behaviors, environmental stressors, and substance use.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of threatened preterm labor (TPL) on children's development, focusing on children at 2 years old born to mothers diagnosed with TPL.
  • It categorizes participants into three groups based on gestational age at delivery: Full-term, Late Preterm, and Very Preterm TPL, alongside a control group of full-term mothers and infants without TPL.
  • Results indicate that TPL children, regardless of gestational age, showed poorer emotional regulation and increased inhibition issues, with Very Preterm TPL children facing even more significant challenges in psychomotor skills and executive functions.

While mental health and psychosocial support receive substantial international attention in humanitarian aid, the well-being of local aid agency staff themselves is often overlooked. This research, using an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design composed of two rounds of interviews (N = 23) and a survey (N = 146), highlights the constraints that local staff encounter to access psychosocial support. The study presents a snapshot of what mental health and psychosocial support is available for aid workers active in emergencies.

Persistent sciatic artery (PSA) is a rare vascular anomaly classified into five types according to the Pillet and Gauffre classification system. Although PSA may be detected as an incidental finding, symptomatic cases account for approximately 80% of all cases and have variable clinical presentations. Due to the frequent ischemic and aneurysmal complications, PSAs can lead to limb-threatening conditions requiring prompt identification and adequate treatment management.

G6PD deficiency results from mutations in the X-linked G6PD gene. More than 200 variants are associated with enzyme deficiency: each one of them may either cause predisposition to haemolytic anaemia triggered by exogenous agents (class B variants), or may cause a chronic haemolytic disorder (class A variants). Genotype-phenotype correlations are subtle.
