Receptor protein tyrosine phosphatases (RPTPs) appear to coordinate many aspects of neural development, including cell proliferation, migration and differentiation. Here we investigated potential roles of RPTPs in the developing mouse retina. Using a degenerate oligonucleotide-based reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction approach, we identified 11 different RPTPs in the retina at embryonic stage 13 (E13).

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and neurturin (NRTN) are neurotrophic factors for parasympathetic neurons including ciliary ganglion (CG) neurons. Recently, we have shown that survival and signaling mediated by GDNF in CG neurons essentially requires transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta). We have provided evidence that TGFbeta regulates the availability of the glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored GDNF receptor alpha 1 (GFRalpha1) by promoting the recruitment of the receptor to the plasma membrane.
