A novel framework of smart monitoring to face the challenges of tree management in historic gardens.

Historic gardens are green spaces characterised by tree stands with several veteran specimens of high artistic and cultural value. Such valuable plant components have to cope with biotic and abiotic stress factors as well as ongoing senescence processes. Maintaining tree health is therefore crucial to preserve their ecosystem services, but also to protect the monument and visitor health.

Altered language network lateralization in euthymic bipolar patients: a pilot study.

Bipolar patients (BD) in the euthymic phase show almost no symptoms, nevertheless possibility of relapse is still present. We expected to find a psychobiological trace of their vulnerability by analyzing a specific network-the Language Network (LN)-connecting many high-level processes and brain regions measured at rest. According to Crow's hypothesis on the key role of language in the origin of psychoses, we expected an altered asymmetry of the LN in euthymic BDs.

Simulation of winter wheat response to variable sowing dates and densities in a high-yielding environment.

Crop multi-model ensembles (MME) have proven to be effective in increasing the accuracy of simulations in modelling experiments. However, the ability of MME to capture crop responses to changes in sowing dates and densities has not yet been investigated. These management interventions are some of the main levers for adapting cropping systems to climate change.

Default mode network shows alterations for low-frequency fMRI fluctuations in euthymic bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a psychiatric condition causing acute dysfunctional mood states and emotion regulation. Specific neuropsychological features are often present also among patients in euthymic phase, who do not show clear psychotic symptoms, and for whom the characterization from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is very limited. This study aims at identifying the neural and behavioral correlates of the default mode network (DMN) using the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (fALFF).

Evidence of language-related left hypofrontality in Major Depression: An EEG Beta band study.

Major depression (MDD) has been associated with an altered EEG frontal asymmetry measured in resting state; nevertheless, this association has showed a weak consistency across studies. In the present study, which starts from an evolutionistic view of psychiatric disorders, we investigated frontal asymmetry in MDD, using language as a probe to test the integrity of large inter- and intra-hemispheric networks and processes. Thirty MDD patients (22 women) and 32 matched controls (HC) were recruited for an EEG recording in resting state and during two linguistic tasks, phonological and semantic.

Impact of aging on urinary excretion of iron and zinc.

Project: Data about the influence of aging on urinary excretion of iron and zinc are scarce. The objective of the present study was to compare the concentration of zinc and iron in the urine of healthy elderly subjects and younger adults.

Procedure: Seven healthy elderly subjects and seven younger adults were selected and submitted to biochemical, clinical, and nutritional tests.

Metabolic parameters of postmenopausal women after quinoa or corn flakes intake--a prospective and double-blind study.

A prospective and double-blind study was conducted on 35 women with weight excess who consumed 25 grams of quinoa flakes (QF) or corn flakes (CF) daily during a period of four consecutive weeks. Evidence of zinc deficiency in competitive swimmers.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional zinc (Zn) status of elite swimmers during different training periods.

Methods: A longitudinal paired study was performed at the University of Sao Paulo in eight male swimmers 18 to 25 y old who had been swimming competitively at the state and national levels for at least 5 y. The swimmers were evaluated over a total period of 14 wk: before the basic and specific preparatory period (BSPP-baseline), at the end of the basic and specific preparatory period (post-BSPP), and at the end of the polishing period (PP).

Atrophic cardiac remodeling induced by taurine deficiency in Wistar rats.

Introduction: Micronutrient deficiency is observed in heart failure patients. Taurine, for example, represents 50% of total free amino acids in the heart, and in vivo studies have linked taurine deficiency with cardiomyopathy.

Volumetric changes in mood-relevant distributed limbic/paralimbic structures have been reported in the recent literature on the course of mood disorders. Patients with unipolar and bipolar disorders have been found to have smaller hippocampal and anterior cingulate volumes. We examined hippocampal, amygdalar and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) volumes in female patients with recurrent familial pure depressive disorder (rFPDD).

Total nitrogen and free amino acid losses and protein calorie malnutrition of hemodialysis patients: do they really matter?

Background/aims: Protein calorie malnutrition (PCM) in patients on hemodialysis (HD) is multifactorial; however, HD per se induces nutrient losses. The aim of the present study was to characterize the losses of total nitrogen (TN) and free amino acids (FAs) through the dialysate and to determine the relationship between this loss and PCM, food ingestion, and the characteristics of the hemodialyzer in patients on HD.

Methods: In a prospective study, 21 patients submitted to low-flux HD 3 times a week were evaluated within a period of 6 months regarding nutritional status, dietary calorie and protein intake, and losses through the dialysate of TN, FA, and urea nitrogen (UN).

Clonal analysis of colorectal tumors using K-ras and p53 gene mutations as markers.

Mutations to the K-ras oncogene and p53 tumor suppressor gene are two of the most common genetic lesions in human cancers. In the present study we examined the clonality of colorectal tumors with respect to each of these genetic alterations. Screening for mutations was carried out using the polymerase chain reaction-based technique of single-strand conformation polymorphism.

Casein, hydrolyzed casein, and amino acids that simulate casein produce the same extent of mucosal adaptation to massive bowel resection in adult rats.

We determined the effect of the extent of protein polymerization on the intestinal hyperplastic adaptation of adult male Wistar rats after 80% resection of the jejunal-ileal segment. Rats received one of four chemically defined solid diets prepared by using casein, two casein hydrolysates of different peptide size distributions, or free amino acids simulating casein and identical in all other components for 12 d, starting 3 d after surgery. Semipaired feeding was used to ensure that the same quantity of food was ingested by each group and as a consequence, nitrogen and energy intakes were reduced to 63% of that obtained with ad libitum feeding of the casein diet to intact rats.

Amino acid patterns in the plasma and ascitic fluid of cirrhotic patients.

Amino acid levels were measured in the plasma and ascitic fluid of 13 alcoholic patients with liver cirrhosis and of 14 normal controls. The plasma aromatic amino acids of the alcoholic patients were not statistically different from those of the control subjects, whereas the levels of branched-chain amino acids were reduced (P less than 0.05).
