Seroprevalence and risk factors for Trypanosoma cruzi infection in the Amazon region of Ecuador.

Trypanosoma cruzi infection in the Ecuadorian Amazon region has recently been reported. A seroepidemiologic survey conducted in four provinces in this region indicates a seroprevalence rate of 2.4% among the 6,866 samples collected in 162 communities.

von Willebrand factor (VWF) released from endothelium is ultralarge (UL) and hyperreactive. If released directly into plasma, it can spontaneously aggregate platelets, resulting in systemic thrombosis. This disastrous consequence is prevented by the ADAMTS13 (ADisintegrin and Metalloprotease with ThromboSpondin motif) cleavage of ULVWF into smaller, less active forms.

In the last three years, the Spanish juridical ordinance has regulated (mostly the radiologic protection area) the essential quality that every radiodiagnostic and dentistry unit should comply with. This quality, as in every service, rests on the competence of the professional's who perform it. Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis analysis of Trypanosoma cruzi isolates from a geographically restricted endemic area for Chagas' disease in Argentina.

Experimental envenoming of mice with venom from the scorpion Centruroides limpidus limpidus: differences in mortality and symptoms with and without antibody therapy relating to differences in age, sex and strain of mouse.

C57Bl/6J and BALB/cAnN inbred strains of mice differed significantly in mortality and symptoms when intoxicated subcutaneously with one LD(50) of venom from Centruroides limpidus limpidus. Higher mortality was observed in C57Bl/6J than in BALB/cAnN. Also, C57Bl/6J mice more quickly developed muscular and respiratory collapse whilst BALB/cAnN mice were hyperactive before dying.

[Clinical and epidemiological survey of dermatophytoses in Jaen (Spain)].

Prevalence of dermatophytosis, with respect to age and sex and dermatophyte species, in Jaen was investigated during a period of three years (1996-1999). The prevalence of dermatophytosis over three years was 4.48 cases / 1000 inhabitants.

Optimization of making barrel-fermented dry muscatel wines.

The optimization of making barrel-fermented muscatel wines requires determining what type of must clarification is most suitable for the quality of the wine, as well as what type of barrel will yield the most acceptable wines. This is achieved by adding pectolytic enzymes to clarify part of the muscatel must statically; the rest is clarified by vacuum filtration. Canine infection and the possible role of dogs in the transmission of American tegumentary leishmaniosis in Salta, Argentina.

Some Leishmania species affect humans in two principal forms: visceral and cutaneous leishmaniosis (CL). Several studies have identified dogs as the main reservoirs of the visceral leishmaniosis (VL) caused by Leishmania infantum. The purpose of this work was to carry out a survey of the canine population associated with human cases of American tegumentary leishmaniosis (ATL), in order to establish the clinical, parasitological, serological and immunological characteristics of the canine disease, in an endemic region for both ATL and Chagas' disease in the province of Salta, in northwestern Argentina.

An atypical protein disulfide isomerase from the protozoan parasite Leishmania containing a single thioredoxin-like domain.

In higher eukaryotes, secretory proteins are under the quality control of the endoplasmic reticulum for their proper folding and release into the secretory pathway. One of the proteins involved in the quality control is protein disulfide isomerase, which catalyzes the formation of protein disulfide bonds. As a first step toward understanding the endoplasmic reticulum quality control of secretory proteins in lower eukaryotes, we have isolated a protein disulfide isomerase gene from the protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani.

Targeted deletion of the gp72 gene decreases the infectivity of Trypanosoma cruzi for mice and insect vectors.

The infective behavior of a mutant Trypanosoma cruzi clone, carrying a targeted deletion of the gp72 gene, was studied in the insect vector Triatoma infestans and in mice. After feeding T. infestans with complement-resistant forms (CRF) of Ynull and wild-type clones, it was observed that the number of parasites released in the bug's feces was reduced to less than 1% in the mutant clone.

Structure of rat parvalbumin with deleted AB domain: implications for the evolution of EF hand calcium-binding proteins and possible physiological relevance.

Among the EF-hand Ca(2+)-binding proteins, parvalbumin (PV) and calbindin D9k (CaB) have the function of Ca(2+) buffers. They evolved from an ancestor protein through two phylogenetic pathways, keeping one pair of EF-hands. They differ by the extra helix-loop-helix (AB domain) found in PV and by the linker between the binding sites.

Biochemical characterization of the helper component of Cauliflower mosaic virus.

The helper component of Cauliflower mosaic virus is encoded by viral gene II. This protein (P2) is dispensable for virus replication but required for aphid transmission. The purification of P2 has never been reported, and hence its biochemical properties are largely unknown.

Force of infection and evolution of lesions of canine tegumentary leishmaniasis in northwestern Argentina.

A clinical-serological follow-up was carried out in a canine population in endemic foci of Leishmania braziliensis spread in northwestern Argentina. Each dog was studied in at least two visits, 309+/-15 days (X+/-SE) apart. Some initially healthy dogs (n=52) developed seroconversion or lesions.

Lithium reduces maternal child abuse behaviour: a preliminary report.

Objective: To find out in child abusing mothers whether aggressiveness in general, but which is directed towards their children in particular, could be reduced by giving lithium.

Method: An open trial of lithium in eight child-abusing mothers. Assessment of aggression using Yudofsky's Overt Aggression Scale.

Kinetics and characterization of cellular responses in the peritoneal cavity of mice infected with Taenia crassiceps.

Changes in the leukocyte population of the peritoneal cavity ensue immediately after infection with Taenia crassiceps metacestodes. Basophils and neutrophils decrease, whereas macrophages, monocytes, and lymphocytes increase to reach only modest levels by 6 wk and then diminish to nearly disappear by 15 wk when the parasite begins rapid reproduction. Eosinophils also appear early in infection, but then abate to lower levels that persist.

Predictors of adverse events after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty in a group of Hispanic patients.

Recent scientific and biotechnological developments have opened the way to novel products, new production methods and to highly sensitive assay procedures. However, the nature of biologicals, and especially new vaccines, blood products and therapeutics, raises particular questions regarding their standardization and quality control.

Backbone dynamics and solution structure refinement of the 15N-labeled human oncogenic protein p13MTCP1: comparison with X-ray data.

Two related oncogenes, TCL1 and MTCP1, are overexpressed in certain T-cell prolymphocytic leukemias as a result of chromosomal rearrangements that involve the translocation of one T-cell receptor gene to either chromosome 14q32 or Xq28, respectively. The human oncoprotein p13MTCP1 is coded by the MTCP1 gene and its primary sequence is highly and only homologous to that of p14TCL1, the product of TCL1. These two proteins likely represent the first members of a new family of oncogenic proteins.

Biological standardization of cytokines and growth factors.

To quantify the biological activity of different cytokine preparations with different specific activities by bioassay, mass units cannot be used and biological activity has to be expressed as << biological potency units >>. The biological unit requires definition by a standard that is assay-independent (especially when measuring a particular type of biological activity). Once the unit is defined, it can be used in any laboratory, thus providing a means of ensuring uniformity throughout the world in the designation of potency of different biological preparations.

Two well-defined motifs in the cAMP-dependent protein kinase inhibitor (PKIalpha) correlate with inhibitory and nuclear export function.

The heat stable inhibitor of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKIalpha) contains both a nuclear export signal (NES) and a high affinity inhibitory region that is essential for inhibition of the catalytic subunit of the kinase. These functions are sequentially independent. Two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy was performed on uniformly [15N]-labeled PKIalpha to examine its structure free in solution.

The present work explores the use of image digitalization of western blot (WB) aiming to extract more information about the humoral immune response of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected individuals, and to analyze obtained data in a multivariate manner. The digitalization and analysis of WB images was performed on 115 sera. Images were analyzed either qualitatively: dendogram and principal component analysis (PCA) or quantitatively: PCA of the total bands, taking either the antigens, which belong to the virus, or only those which do not.
