The Curious Case of "Men in Nursing" as a Diversity Issue: A Critical Reading of the Literature.

In recent years the situation of "men in nursing" has been framed as a diversity issue, analogous to efforts to increase the proportion of women in male-dominated occupations, and to racial diversity in health professions. Advocates claim that nursing education is dominated by a "feminine" perspective, resulting in unhappy male students and marginalized male faculty. This is puzzling, as a close reading of the literature finds little support for these claims; and a persistent discounting of male advantages.

The Sexual Double Standard toward Non-Heterosexual Populations: Evaluations of Sexually Active Gay Men and Lesbian Women.

We examined the sexual double standard (SDS) toward sexually active gay men and lesbian women and the role that participants' masculinity and femininity played in their evaluations. We hypothesized that there would be a reverse SDS in which highly sexually active lesbian women would be evaluated positively and highly sexually active gay men negatively, with both being evaluated more negatively than less sexually active gay men and lesbians. We also hypothesized that masculinity would moderate this effect, with participant masculinity being positively related to stronger negative evaluations of highly sexually active gay targets and more positive evaluations of highly sexually active lesbian targets.

Basal forebrain cholinergic activity is necessary for upward firing rate homeostasis in the rodent visual cortex.

Bidirectional homeostatic plasticity allows neurons and circuits to maintain stable firing in the face of developmental or learning-induced perturbations. In the primary visual cortex (V1), upward firing rate homeostasis (FRH) only occurs during active wake (AW) and downward during sleep, but how this behavioral state-dependent gating is accomplished is unknown. Here, we focus on how AW enables upward FRH in V1 of juvenile Long Evans rats.

Angular Correlations in the β Decay of ^{8}B: First Tensor-Current Limits from a Mirror-Nucleus Pair.

We present the first measurement of the α-β-ν angular correlation in the Gamow-Teller β^{+} decay of ^{8}B. This was accomplished using the Beta-decay Paul Trap, expanding on our previous work on the β^{-} decay of ^{8}Li. The ^{8}B result is consistent with the V-A electroweak interaction of the standard model and, on its own, provides a limit on the exotic right-handed tensor current relative to the axial-vector current of |C_{T}/C_{A}|^{2}<0.

A Qualitative Study to Inform Development of a Behavioral Intervention to Promote Food Allergy Self-Management and Adjustment among Early Adolescents.

Objective: Adolescence is a high-risk period for patients with food allergy (FA) as management responsibilities shift to the youth. This study used qualitative methods to explore FA experiences among a diverse pediatric FA population and inform behavioral intervention development.

Improved Limit on Tensor Currents in the Weak Interaction from ^{8}Li β Decay.

The electroweak interaction in the standard model is described by a pure vector-axial-vector structure, though any Lorentz-invariant component could contribute. In this Letter, we present the most precise measurement of tensor currents in the low-energy regime by examining the β-ν[over ¯] correlation of trapped ^{8}Li ions with the Beta-decay Paul Trap. We find a_{βν}=-0.

"He just teaches whatever he thinks is important": Analysis of comments in student evaluations of teaching.

Student evaluations of teaching are ubiquitous in higher education; however, most prior research has focused on the numeric ratings, with little systematic attention given to the qualitative comments. In this study, written comments were collected as part of the regular evaluation of a community health nursing course over four semesters. Taken as a whole, student comments were strikingly consistent and mostly negative.

Tracheal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treated with Tracheal Resection and Anastomosis in a Cat.

A 10-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair cat presented for a suspected tracheal mass. Radiographs confirmed an intraluminal tracheal mass. Tracheal resection and anastomosis of 5 tracheal rings was performed with minimal, mild intraoperative complications and no postoperative complications.

To date, polysomnography (PSG) is the most commonly used sleep-monitoring technology,however, it is complex, intrusive, expensive and uncomfortable.

Successful Surgical Therapy of a Double Aortic Arch in a 10-Month-Old Mixed Breed Dog.

A 10-month-old female spayed mixed breed dog with a suspected vascular ring anomaly was presented for exercise intolerance and wheezing. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a double aortic arch. The smaller right aortic arch was successfully ligated via right 4th intercostal thoracotomy.

Impact of Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer measurements of β decay of fission products on the decay heat and reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} flux calculation.

We report the results of a β-decay study of fission products ^{86}Br, ^{89}Kr, ^{89}Rb, ^{90gs}Rb, ^{90m}Rb, ^{90}Kr, ^{92}Rb, ^{139}Xe, and ^{142}Cs performed with the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) and on-line mass-separated ion beams. These radioactivities were assessed by the Nuclear Energy Agency as having high priority for decay heat analysis during a nuclear fuel cycle. We observe a substantial increase in β feeding to high excited states in all daughter isotopes in comparison to earlier data.

Practical Discourse Revisited: Hermeneutics at the Intersection of Philosophy and Nursing.

Three early papers by Janice Thompson-Practical Discourse, Critical Scholarship, and Hermeneutic Inquiry-are examined in reference to the historical context of the time (1985-1990), and implications for current scholarship. Hermeneutic philosophy has been neglected in recent years, overshadowed by its weaker cousin phenomenology. I argue that renewed attention to hermeneutics would help us focus on the "situatedness" of nursing scholars, the class politics of academia, and a better balance in interpretative work between faith and suspicion.

Evidence for Gamow-Teller Decay of ^{78}Ni Core from Beta-Delayed Neutron Emission Studies.

The β-delayed neutron emission of ^{83,84}Ga isotopes was studied using the neutron time-of-flight technique. The measured neutron energy spectra showed emission from states at excitation energies high above the neutron separation energy and previously not observed in the β decay of midmass nuclei. The large decay strength deduced from the observed intense neutron emission is a signature of Gamow-Teller transformation.

Otto Aufranc Award: A Multicenter, Randomized Study of Outpatient versus Inpatient Total Hip Arthroplasty.

Background: Length of stay after total hip arthroplasty (THA) has decreased over the last two decades. However, published studies that have examined same-day and early discharge protocols after THA have been done in highly selected patient groups operated on by senior surgeons in a nonrandomized fashion without control subjects.

Questions/purposes: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare patients undergoing THA who are discharged on the same day as the surgery ("outpatient," less than 12-hour stay) with those who are discharged after an overnight hospital stay ("inpatient") with regard to the following outcomes: (1) postoperative pain; (2) perioperative complications and healthcare provider visits (readmission, emergency department or physician office); and (3) relative work effort for the surgeon's office staff.

A qualitative assessment of the perceived risks of electronic cigarette and hookah use in pregnancy.

Background: Studies reveal that electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) and hookah use are increasing among adolescents and young adults. However, the long-term health effects are unknown, especially with regards to pregnancy. Because of the increased use in women of reproductive age, and the unknown long-term health risks, our primary objectives were to determine the perceived risks of e-cigarette and hookah use in pregnancy, and learn common colloquial terms associated with e-cigarettes.

Surgical excision of anal sac apocrine gland adenocarcinomas with and without adjunctive chemotherapy in dogs: 42 cases (2005-2011).

Objective-To identify variables associated with prognosis in dogs undergoing surgical excision of anal sac apocrine gland adenocarcinomas (ASACs) with and without adjunctive chemotherapy. Design-Retrospective case series. Animals-42 dogs with ASACs.

'Looking like a bad person': vocabulary of motives and narrative analysis in a story of nursing collegiality.

Collegiality among nurses is necessary for the accomplishment of the tasks of care, for safety and quality improvement and for professional self-regulation. Nurses, especially in hospitals, are more likely to work in groups than other professionals, yet those relationships have not been well explored. Bullying, intimidation and fear are frequently identified, while respectful disagreements are rarely described.

Professional collegiality and peer monitoring among nursing staff: an ethnographic study.

Background: Patient safety and professional self-regulation systems both rely on professional colleagues to hold each other accountable for quality of care.

Objectives: To understand how staff nurses manage variations in practices within the group, and negotiate the rules-in-use for quality of care, collegiality, and accountability.

Design/methods: Ethnographic case study; participant-observation, semi-structured interviews, policy analysis.

New half-lives of r-process Zn and Ga isotopes measured with electromagnetic separation.

The β decays of neutron-rich nuclei near the doubly magic (78)Ni were studied at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility using an electromagnetic isobar separator. The half-lives of (82)Zn (228±10  ms), (83)Zn (117±20  ms), and (85)Ga (93±7  ms) were determined for the first time. These half-lives were found to be very different from the predictions of the global model used in astrophysical simulations.

Agminated cellular neurothekeoma.

Cellular neurothekeoma represents a benign, slow-growing neoplasm that typically occurs as a solitary lesion on the face, neck or arm. Reports of multiple lesions are rare. To our knowledge, multiple lesions occurring as eruptive clusters localized to a single anatomical site has not been previously reported.

Orbital dependent nucleonic pairing in the lightest known isotopes of tin.

By studying the (109)Xe→(105)Te→(101)Sn superallowed α-decay chain, we observe low-lying states in (101)Sn, the one-neutron system outside doubly magic (100)Sn. We find that the spins of the ground state (J=7/2) and first excited state (J=5/2) in (101)Sn are reversed with respect to the traditional level ordering postulated for (103)Sn and the heavier tin isotopes. Through simple arguments and state-of-the-art shell-model calculations we explain this unexpected switch in terms of a transition from the single-particle regime to the collective mode in which orbital-dependent pairing correlations dominate.

Chylothorax treated via thoracic duct ligation and omentalization.

Chylothorax is an uncommon, potentially life-threatening disease of dogs and cats. Medical records of 12 animals (five dogs and seven cats) undergoing surgical management of chylothorax from 2001 to 2005 were reviewed. All animals received thoracic duct ligation and thoracic omentalization.

Parathyroid hyperplasia of auto-transplanted tissue in forearm skin.

Currently, the treatment of choice for refractory tertiary hyperparathyroidism is a total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation of the parathyroid tissue into the forearm. Recurrent hyperparathyroidism after autotransplantation requiring surgical excision of the autograft is uncommon. We describe a female patient with recurrent hyperplasia who underwent an excision of her parathyroid autograft.
