We characterized total Hg concentrations and DOM characteristics during snowmelt by weekly and/or monthly sampling at three locations in the upper Provo River, northern Utah, over two water years (2016 and 2017). Total Hg concentrations increased from <1 ng/L during baseflow to >7 ng/L during the snowmelt period (April-June), with decreasing concentrations from upstream to downstream.

We present 1 year of mass-loss data obtained from cm-sized chunks of the frequently used explosives TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) and Tritonal (an 80:20 mixture of TNT and aluminum flakes) exposed outdoors to weather and dissolve under natural conditions. The explosive chunks rested on glass frits in individual funnels and all precipitation interacting with them was collected and analyzed.

Rainfall-driven dissolution of the particles then begins a process whereby aqueous HE solutions can enter the soil and groundwater as contaminants. We dripped water onto individual particles of TNT, Tritonal, Comp B and Octol to simulate how surface-deposited HE particles might dissolve under the action of rainfall and to use the data to verify a model that predicts HE dissolution as a function of particle size, particle composition and rainfall rate.

To test whether immune-system-expressed loci show a correspondingly elevated rate of within-species nonsynonymous (amino acid altering) polymorphism, we examined gene diversity (heterozygosity) at 4,911 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites at 481 protein-coding loci. At loci with nonimmune functions, gene diversity at nonsynonymous SNP sites was typically lower than that at silent SNP sites (those not altering the amino acid sequence) in the same gene, a pattern that is an evidence of purifying selection acting to eliminate slightly deleterious variants.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo develop new strategies for searching for genetic associations with complex human diseases, we analyzed 2784 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 396 protein-coding genes involved in biological processes relevant to cancer and other complex diseases, with respect to gene diversity within samples of individuals representing the three major historic human populations (African, European, and Asian) and with respect to interpopulation genetic distance. Reduced levels of both intrapopulation gene diversity and interpopulation genetic distance were seen in the case of SNPs located within the 5'-UTR and at nonsynonymous SNPs, causing radical changes to protein structure. Reduction of gene diversity at SNP loci in these categories was evidence of purifying selection acting at these sites, which in turn causes a reduction in interpopulation divergence.

Estimation of gene diversity (heterozygosity) at 1442 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci in an ethnically diverse sample of humans revealed consistently reduced gene diversities at SNP loci causing amino acid changes, particularly those causing amino acid changes predicted to be disruptive to protein structure. The reduction of gene diversity at these SNP loci, in comparison to SNPs in the same genes not affecting protein structure, is evidence that negative natural selection (purifying selection) has reduced the population frequencies of deleterious SNP alleles. This, in turn, suggests that slightly deleterious mutations are widespread in the human population and that estimation of gene diversity even in a sample of modest size can help guide the search for disease-associated genes.
